Born abt 1884 at Hanley
Son of Charles and Harriet Parnell Hankey (nee Whitehouse). Husband of Bertha Hankey.
He was residing at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley and at the time of his enlistment he was still serving with the 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment.
29 September 1914 he joined (embodied service) at Shelton, aged 32 as Gunner No. 503 North Midlands (Home Service) Staffordshire Royal Garrison Artillery.
30 September 1914 he was promoted to Corporal
17 December 1914 he was promoted to Sergeant.
25 March 1915 he transferred to 2/3rd Royal Field Artillery and later transferred to 1st North Midland Ammunition Column, Gunner No. 574.
29 September 1914 to 11 September 1915 he did duty at Hartshill.
25 February 1915 he was in hospital on the departure of 1st North Midland Ammunition Column.
25 March 1915 discharged from hospital, attached to 2nd/5th Battery Roya Field Artillery.
4 September 1915 he was ordered to home by an Army Doctor.
11 September 1915 discharged as Sergeant - Para 392 (XVI) King’s Regulations being no longer physically fit for military service, due to a medical board 3 September 1915, at Hemel Hempstead.
11 September 1915 discharged from Hemel Hempstead and the unit he was attached to was, as recorded in his Army records, 1st/1st Divisional Ammunition Column North Midlands Territorial Force attached to 2/5th North Staffordshire Royal Field Artillery Battery 2/3rd North Midlands Territorial Army Brigade. He was aged 33 and his disability was Tuberculosis. He was treated for his condition by having 75 Tuberculosis injections during 1911 and his condition had deteriorated since his enlistment.
He was awarded a Silver Badge on roll no. 1182.
9 October 1915 he re-enlisted at Stoke, occupation assistant Fireman (potteries) living with his family at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley and was 32 years and 9 months. He had previously served 12 years with 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment and 1 year with North Midlands Field Artillery. (First Army Records not available)
14 October 1915 he re-joined at Hornchurch as Private No. 3739 25th Middlesex Regiment (Pioneer Corp).
13 October 1915 he was posted 25th Middlesex Regiment as Private.
15 October 1915 promoted to Acting Sergeant with 25th Battalion.
4 November 1915 still as acting Sergeant, he was transferred to 26th Battalion.
14 May 1916 he was on a Medical Board at Hounslow and discharged due to Tubercle of Lung, which originated from an old infection.
15 May 1916 he reverted back to Private still with 26th Battalion.
30 May 1916 he was discharged at Hounslow to his home at 6 Mulberry Street, Hanley.
30 August 1916 he was discharged from the Army, no longer physically fit for war service after serving 234 days.
He died 1918 at Hanley aged 34.
A war gratuity was awarded to his widow Bertha Elizabeth 15 September 1919.
