He is at rest in Leigh Cemetery, Leigh, Lancashire.
He served in India and was exposed to gas which was being tried out by the British army.
He was born at Hindsford, Lancashire in 1903 to John and Sarah Dempsey. In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at 22 Shuttle Hillock, Bickershaw, Wigan.
His siblings were Mary - born 1886, Patrick - born 1897, Lucy - born 1900 and Agnes - born 1907. On the 25th March 1918, aged 21 his brother, Patrick Dempsey was killed in action while serving as Sergeant 200230, D Company, 1/5th Manchester Regiment.
He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
While walking around the cemetery , I was close to a lady who was tending a grave. She made conversation and we spoke for a while. She asked out of interest what I was doing I replied that I was photographing war graves. She then told me that her father had been a corporal in the Manchester Regiment and the grave she was tending was his.
I asked for her permission to photograph the memorial and to upload it onto MilitaryImages.Net. She stated she was very pleased to give me permission to upload the photograph and that it would be seen by other people. She went on to say that some one might recognise the name and maybe have information or a photograph of her father.
She told me that she had never known her father and in fact knew little about him, so putting this info on line might shed a light on him possibly.
