PERKINS John Henry

PERKINS John Henry, Private 26864, Hampshire Regiment died 9th December 1918. He was the son of Thomas and Mary who in 1911 were living with their family at 29, Temple Bar, Willenhall. He is at rest in Bentley Cemetery, Willenhall, Staffordshire
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 25th October 1915 aged 25 and was posted as Private 4671, 5/6th South Staffordshire Regiment.. He gave his home address as Gomer Street, Willenhall and his occupation as an electric crane driver. On the 24th June 1916 he was transferred to 1/6th Hampshire Regiment as private 26864. On the 5th June 1917 he was posted to the 3rd Hampshire Regiment. He fought in France from the 25th June 1916 to 16th November 1916. On the 19th October 1916 he was shot in both legs while in action in Flanders. (There is no record of his treatment locations ) He was sent to a hospital in England on the on the 11th November 1916 seriously ill. He sustained in his left leg, a Compound Comminuted Fracture (Shattered,or splintered, bones caused by the impact of the bullets) to his tibia and fibula and his right leg partial fracture to his tibia. He under went a Medical Board on the 16th April 1917 at Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. I can only assume that was the hospital the treated him. He was transferred to the Army Reserve Class P on the 29th June 1917 and was Medically Discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service. He was aged 27, and was discharge to his home at 14 Church Street Willenhall where his wife, Gertrude nee Morris and daughter Gertie born 2nd February 1916. He was married in 1915.
