Percy VERNON

VERNON Percy. Sapper 59693 Royal Engineers died of wounds in France 20th October 1915 aged 20. He was the son of John and Mary of 116 Kings Street, Knutsford and brother of Harry who also fell in the Great War. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire and he is at rest in Lillers Communal Cemetery, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 28th December 1914 aged 19 and 6 months and he was a skilled cabinet maker. He lived with his parents at 116, Kings Street. On the 5th January 1915 he was at Chatham Royal Engineers Depot and was transferred to 70th Field Company. On the 31st May 1915 he embarked for France with 70th Field Company. He was wounded on the 18th October 1915 and died on the 20th October 1915 at 9th Casualty Clearing Station. He was ineterred at Lillers, France by the Reverend R Holmes.
