Rifleman 12/864 James PARKHILL. 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Died 17th February 1919. He was the son of Robert and Christina. He is at rest in Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Some notes from what remains of his army record
He joined up aged 24 and 1 month and was sent to Training Camp (Depot) at Clandeboye, near Bangor, County Down. He was born at Ballycastle, in 1890 to Robert and Christina in 1901 were living with his siblings at 7, Poor Row, Ballycastle
He was first married to Mary nee McMullan at Ballycastle, County Antrim. The church appears to be called St James, Ballycastle. They had one child called Christina born at Ballycastle on the 30th October 1909. His wife died. The child was being look after by his parents who in 1911 were at 2, Wilson Row, Ballycastle. In 1915 his parents were now at Castle Street, Ballycastle
He served in France with the B.E.F., from the 19th July 1916 to 11th October 1916, then back to England. The back to France on the 18th January 1917 to 8th April 1917. He was wounded in action. Gunshot wound to his right leg with a compound fracture to tibia and fibula. He was sent to the Military Hospital, York on the 8th and was admitted into the hospital on the 11th and was discharged on the 12th November 1917 to his home and new wife at 1, Mary Street, Newtownards His new wife was a widow and called Margaret (looks like Stitch) They were married in Newtownards on the 11th February 1916. He was on a medical board at Military Hospital, York on the 22nd October 1917 where he was medically discharged to pension as being no longer physically fit for war service. He received the Silver War Badge on the 22nd March 1917 at 1, May Street, Newtownards. His wife received the Kings Certificate on behalf of her late husband on the 12th March 1919.
