The image of the Home Guard training in civilian clothes with broomsticks and Molotov cocktails was very rapidly changed as equipment was found for them. By September 1940 most Home Guard units were equipped with a TOE similar to that of regular units - albeit with less artillery.
Most were equipped with US surplus M1917 Enfield's, BAR's and machineguns firing 30-06. To ensure that .303 wasn't used with these, a red band was painted around the barrel of each firearm.
