Local Defence Volunteers (as the Home Guard was originally called) on parade. Note that not all have even the LDV armband, far less any other equipment.
This guys would have been a pain in the ass for the German invasion force. You can bet it.
By the photo you can see that more than half of this group know how to shot and handle a rifle, being all of them WWI veterans. You can put those guys in a bunker, and anyone trying to close in for assault is going to have a bad day with the "Gran Dads", as this guys know how to fight dirty and sure they still have a few dirty tricks in their book left.
Huge respect for them, they already went to hell and back, and knew the real deal first hand, and when their country needed them they were ready jump into the fray again.
By the time of any likely invasion they were pretty well equipped with small arms and support equipment. Mostly US surplus M1917 Enfield rifles in 30-06 with BARs and M1917 MGs in the same caliber.
