BEARDMORE, Oliver Arthur. Acting Sergeant 437802, Labour Corps, formerly Corporal 17074 Royal Berkshire Regiment died 14th May 1918. He was born on the 26th December 1868 to Samuel, jeweller, and Emily of 94, Lichfield Street, Warwick. He is at rest in Whitnash Road, Cemetery, Leamington, Warwickshire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up at Warwickshire on the 31st March 1915 aged 46, and 90 days. He lived with his wife Sarah Lucy nee Haynes and their children at 46, Bridge End, Warwick. He was married on the 20th August 1898 at St Mary Church, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire ,she was aged 36 and he was aged 28, and was employed as a merchants clerk. On the day he joined up he was posted to the Royal Berkshire Regiment as private 1707074. On the 27th October 1917 he was transferred to the 52nd Home Service Employment Company, Labour Corps, with the rank of acting corporal and new army number 437802. He was in hospital a few times, the first was on the 8th December 1917 till the 26th December 1917 at Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham suffering from syphilitic chancre of the tounge, He was then transferred to Central Hospital, Lichfield from the 27th December 1917 to the 15th January 1918 suffering from syphilis and finally on the 16th January 1918 he was in Warnford Hospital, Radford Road, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire suffering from Epithelioma of the tongue and throat. He died from this complaint at the hospital on the 14th May 1918. It appears through correspondence that they lost this soldier in transit from one hospital to another.
On the 15th January 1918 he was re-transferred to Bagthorpe Hospital and he was given a train warrant to cover that journey. While at Lichfield rail station he was taken ill and stated that he could not proceed to Nottingham as there was no train connection, so he went home to Leamington. While at home he was seen by Doctor Cole who ordered him to Warnford Hospital the same day and later had an operation. He left a widow and two children.
