NELSON, Roger

Roger NELSON 1888 - 1947. He was the son of Elijah and Anges of Temperance Hotel, Arnside and wife of Ellen. He is at rest in Arnside Cemetery, Westmorland.
Some notes from what remains of his Army record.

He joined the army Royal Garrison Artillery on the 4th April 1916 and as Gunner 72059 and was posted to Fort Brockhurst, Portsmouth. He was aged 34 years and 8 months lived with his parents at Temperance Hotel, Arnside, gave his father, Elijah as next of kin and worked as a motor and carriage driver. He served in France from the 27th January 1917 to 10th June 1917, back to England, France from 13th October 1917 to 18th October 1918, on leave to England from 19th October 1918 to 1st November 1918 the he returned to France 2nd November 1918. He was absent without leave (AWOL) whilst stationed at Fort Brockhurst from midnight 25th August 1917 to the 27th August 1917, total, 1 day 20 hours and 45 minutes. He was confined to barracks for 7 days.

He embarked from Folkstone on the 27th January 1917 and disembarked at Boulogne the next day. On the 12th May 1917 he was admitted to No 6 General Hospital, France with trench fever. He was invalided to England on the 10th June 1917 on Hospital Ship, Jan Breydel. He was then admitted, firstly, on the 11th June to Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton from 11th June to 17th July 1917, then transferred the same day to Seaford Military Hospital, where he improved, he was then returned to Kitchener Military Hospital on the 10th August 1917 until he was discharged fit for service on the 16th August 1917.
