BROWNING Reginald Thomas Pte 36th Australian Infantry died 7/7/1917 Buried in Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium. V.A.26 In 1901 he was an inmate in Stroud Workhouse with his brother George and sister Lily, no parents shown. Reginald left our shores from Tilbury Docks on the 18th June 1914 aged 19 and gave his occupation as a Farm Student, bound for melbourne, Victoria, Australia and ship Hawker Bay. He enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on the 20th January 1916 as Private 709, C.Coy, 36th Battalion aged 21 He gave his address in England as Butterow, Stroud, Gloucestershire, occupation Leather Worker,(I found later on another occupation as Pig Farmer, that may well be in New South Wales)He nominated his sister, Lily Louise Webb of 29, High Street, Reading, formerly 16, Southshore Road, Reading, Berkshire. He took the Oath on the at Liverpool, New South Wales 20th January 1916. He embarked Sydney on the 13th March 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 9th July 1916.Whilst in England he went A.W.O.L from midnight 24th October 1916 to 10-15am on the 26th October 1916, he was sentenced to 9 days without pay. 22nd November 1916 left Southhampton for France. On the 22nd January 1917 he was wounded in the field by a bayonet in his leg. He was admitted to 10th Australina Ambulance Clearing Station, the 24th January from 2nd Casualty Clearing Station to Ambulance Train. 28th January was transferred to 7th Convalescent Depot at Boulogne from the 3rd Canadian General Hospital. He rejoined his unit in the field at Etaples.On the 7th July 1916 he was killed in action in the field. No record was found as to the cause of death. Another record was found, Application ot Enlist in the Australian Imperial Force dated 6th January 1916 ocupation Pig Farmer address was given as C/O Mrs Frieberh, Matriville Post Office, via Botany, New South Wales. On the 28th September 1917 his sister,Clara L Huxford of 4 Wellcroft Cottages, Lightpill near Stroud received the effects from her late brother

STEPHENS Walter John Pte 8/1644, 3rd Reinforcements, Olago Regt N.Z.E.F. died 3/8/1917. Son of Albert and Mary Ann, nee Evans of Watledge near Nailsworth. Buried in Trios Arbres Cemetery, Steenerck, France, I.X.27 A record has been found indicating that he died of wounds in Belgium. The address he was residing at in New Zealand at the time of his enlistment was the Cheese Factory, Eltham New Zealand

STEVENS A Sgt Canadian Army It has now been asertained the his name was Andrew, who attested in January 1915 and may have been serving with the 127th York Rangers. He left our shores for Canada on the 21st August 1912 from Bristol on ship, Royal Edward and his occupation was a farmer. On the 5th December 1916 he returned to his home at Forest Green, nr Stroud, Gloucestershire from Canada and arrived at Liverpool on ship Grampian, his occupation was a munitions worker. He was not listed as a soldier as there was a separate list for soldiers on this ship. A check with the Canadian War Project show no A Stevens/Stephens rank a Sgt with the stated unit listed with them. I have e-mailed the project and hopefully they may be able to shed some light on the person. (My personal view, I can not see someone attesting in 1915 and in 1916 returning to England got to the rank of sergeant)
