War Memorial located in the cemetery opposite St John the parish Church

1814-1918
In proud and grateful memory of the following men from this locality who fell in the Great War.

William Foster ATKINSON Private 15622, 11th Lonsdale Battalion, Border Regiment, killed in action
1 July 1916. Son of Mark and Elizabeth in 1911 he was residing with his parents at Murton Appleby, Westmorland. He joned the army aged 19 years and 2 months, lived at Murton , occupation, Labourer. His mother was his next of kin and at some stage she moved to Cressbrook, Kirby Longsdale. She remarried to a Mr Graham and lived at 29 Coronation Street, Bernard Castle, County Durham. At rest in Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille, Somme France.


John DENT. Private 202882, 11th Lonsdale Battalion, Border Regiment, Born and raised at Warcop, Westmorland. died of wounds 4 December 1917 aged 23. Son of Robert and Mary Dent, of Burton House, Rylstone, Skipton. At rest in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Mitchell ELLIOTT. Private 202883, 8th Border Regiment. Born at Appleby and lived at Murton Appleby, Westmorland. Killed in action 7 June 1917. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

George Victor LANCASTER. Private 865543, 44th Canadian Infantry died 10 August 1918 aged 24. Son of George and Annas Lancaster, of Coupland House, Hilton, Appleby, Westmorland, England. At rest in Rosieres Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France

John PATTINSON. Private 3181, 1/5th Border Regiment died 16 September 1916 aged 20. Son of J. and Margaret Pattinson, of 37, Ann Street, Kendal. Native of Appelby, Westmorland. His mother was granted a war gratuity 21 December 1916 revised 1 September 1919. At rest in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

Percy PEARSON. Rifleman Z/2693, 1st Rifle Brigade died 4 May 1915 aged 22. Son of John and Annie Pearson, of The Cottage, Murton, Appleby, Westmorland. At rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France.

Anthony RUDD. Private 31072, 39th Machine Gun Corps, formerly Private 21484, Border Regiment. Died of pneumonia 29 September 1918 aged 25 in a Russian Hospital, Kasvin, Persia.. Son of William and Elizabeth Rudd, of Flake Bridge, Appleby, Westmorland. His brother John Henry also fell in action 1917., Westmorland. At rest in Tehran War Cemetery, Iran.
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up aged 23 years and 3 months. Resided with his parents at Flakebridge, Hilton, Westmorland, occupation miner. He was posted to the 12th Lonsdale Battalion, Border Regiment and later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He embarked Southampton 18 September 1916 disembarked at Basra 15 October 1916. His parents were informed what he died of and where which was a Russian Hospital, Kesvin, Persia.

John Henry RUDD. Driver 39255, D Battery, 83rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 24 March 1917 aged 29 years. Son of William and Elizabeth Rudd, of Flakebridge, near Appleby, Westmorland. Born at Murton, near Appleby, Westmorland. His brother Anthony also fell in 1918. At rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

John THRELKELD. Private 15732, 6th Border Regiment killed in action 4 October 1917 aged 25. Born at Langwathby, resided at Penrith, Cumberland. Only son of Mrs. Jane Ann Burgess, formerly Threlkeld of Gateslands Farm, Morland, Penrith, Westmorland. . In 1911 he was living with his mother and stepfather William Burgess at Gatesland Farm, (Morland Field). At rest in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined the Border Regiment aged 22 years and 2 months and posted to the Regimental Depot at Carisle on the 23 September 1914. His next of kin was his mother of Morland Field, Penrith, Cumberland. He was posted to the 3 Battalion on the 19 October 1914 the 10 Battalion on the 31 October 1914. He was posted to France on the 8 September 1915 and posted to the 7th Battalion the next day. He was shot and wounded in his left hand and fingers on the 7 August 1916, treated at 51 Field Ambulance on the 8th and transferred the same day to 1/1st South Midland Casualty Clearing Station. The next day was transferred to No 10 General Hospital Rouen. The 11th he was invalided to England on Hospital Ship St Patrick and admitted on the 12th into 1 Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge He was discharged fit for war service 1 January 1917 and given sick leave. He embarked for France from Folkestone on the 7 September 1917 and disembarked the same day at Boulogne. The 11 January 1917 posted to 3rd Battalion and the 6th Battalion on the 7 September 1917. He was killed in action on the 4 October 1917.

Thomas Sydney DARGUE. Private 3601384, 2nd King’s Own Scottish Borders died 20 July 1944 aged 25 years. Son of William and Mary Agnes Dargue, of Hilton, Westmorland. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Murton Cum Hilton, Cemetery, Westmorland and at rest in Imphal War Cemetery, India.

William Ernest ELLWOOD. Sergeant, Wireless Operator, Air Gunner 1075913, 166 Squadron (O.C.U.), Operational Conversion Units, Royal Air Force (VR) died 1 October 1943 aged 22. Son of William Addison Ellwood and Annie Ellwood, of Great Asby. At rest in St Peter Churchyard, Ashby, Westmorland.
Wills and Admin, Ancestry. He resided at Well Green, Asby, Appleby Westmorland. Died on date stated, his effects went to William Addison Ellwood, farmer. Son of Robert W and Mary

Alan Brunskill HOWE. Lance Sergeant 7940527, Derbyshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps died 27 April 1945 aged 24 years. Son of Robert W and Mary nee Brunskill. At rest in Padua War Cemetery, Italy.

Thomas Edward WADESON. Sergeant Air Gunner 1489406, 75 Squadron Royal Air Force (VR) died 3 August 1943 aged 21. Son of John R. and Georgina Wadeson, of Appleby, Westmorland. At rest in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany.
