MUCH MARCLE WAR MEMORIAL, HEREFORDSHIRE
This memorial is situated in the church of St Bartholomew Much Marcle

To the honoured memory of the gallant men of Much Marcle and Yatton
who died in the service of their country in the Great War 1914 1918
This memorial was erected by their fellow parishioners

The men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt.
They were a wall unto us both day and by night

Palestine Gallipoli

ADDIS, John Arthur, Sergeant 11292, 5th Kings Shropshire Light Infantry killed in action 18th March 1916 aged 20. Son of John Charles Addis and Annie of "Redlands" Much Marcle. His ocupation prior to enlistmet, Groom Gardener. Buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

BAKER, James Benjamin, Rifleman A/591 7th, Kings Royal Rifle Corps died 12th March 1916 aged 26.
BROOKES, Laurence, Private, Army Ordnance Corps. Son of Francis Henry Baker. of 17, Woodall St., Bloxwich, Staffs. Born at Much Marcle. Buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard, Much Marcle

DALLOW, Henry, (CWGC has Harry) Private 2287, 1st Herefordshire Regiment, died 29th June 1916 aged 19.
Son of G. H. and Elizabeth Dallow, of Tower Hill, Llangarren, Ross. Born at Tretire, Ross. Buried in Yatton Churchyard Herefordshire

DOVER, Alfred Edward, Private 25168, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. died 30th December 1916. Native of Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. In 1911 he was residing at the Walwyn Arms, Much Marcle with his wife Gertrude who was the manager of the public house. Alfred's occupation was a worker. His parents were William and Ann, who in 1911 were residing at The Leys, Burwell, Cambridgeshire He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France

DOVEY, George Henry, Pioneer 130336, F. Spec Coy, Royal Engineers died 7th June 1917 aged 20, Son of George and Lucy of Much Marcle. Buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St-Eloi, France

EVANS, William Ernest, Private 6490, (CWGC has Lance Corporal) 2nd Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, killed in action 25th April 1915 aged 32. Son of Matthew and Maria nee Moreton who in 1911 she was widowed and residing at 2, Harrison Gardens, Bath Street, Hereford. Native of the parish of St Peter's Hereford Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium

FORTEY, Edgar Albert Ivor, Private 10969, 1st Royal Warwickshire Regiment, died 16th February 1917 aged 21. Son of Daniel and Clara of Hill Cottage, Much Marcle. Buried at Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, Somme, France.

formerly 3273, Herefordshire Regiment, died 21st February 1918 aged 39. Son of Josiah and Priscilla Forty, of Gammage Cottage, Much Marcle; husband of Charlotte Forty, of Woodreding Cottage, Yatton, Ross, Herefordshire. Buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard, Much Marcle

FREER, William James, Lance Corporal 19478, 2nd Welch Regiment died 7th December 1915 aged 19.

Son of William and Eliza of "Wonder" Putley, Ledbury, Herefordshire, native of Much Marcle. he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium
HAINES, Percy Allen , Aircraftman , Air Mechanic Class 3, 123389, Royal Air Force died 13th September 1918 aged 18. Son of Thomas and Mary of Perrystone Hill, Yatton. Buried in Yatton Churchyard, Herefordshire

HOPE, Albert Leonard, Private 238999, 1st Reserve Battalion,Herefordshire Regiment died 24th February 1917 aged 26. Son of Mr and Mrs John Hope of Huntley's Cottage, Muchmarcle. Buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard, Much Marcle.

JONES Arthur Private, Royal Marine Light Infantry. , (The following information is inscribed on his father's headstone in Much Marcle Churchyard, youngest son of James Jones of the Royal Navy, died May 11th 1915 aged 17.he is buried in Alexandria) The CWGC have the following and he is the only Jones who died on the date as inscribed. ROSSER, Jack M. Private, 4th Grenadier Guards (CWGC John Morgan Rosser, Private DG/6937, 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, formerly Princess Royal's 7th Dragoon Guards, died 28th October 1914 aged 27. Son of Charles and Harriet of Catchapin, Much Marcle. Buried in Pont-Du-Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, France
Some notes from his Enlistment Record
He enlisted 19th February 1906 at Worcester aged 19. He was born in 1887, in Hereford and gave his occupation as a farm labourer
He had a medical in Canterbury 11 September 1908 and was fir for service in Egypt
He was admitted to hospital in Cairo from the 21st August 1909 to 19th September 1909 with an infection to external left Meatus (inner ear) On the 30th September 1910 he had a medical in Cairo where he declared fit for sea to India. he sailed on troopship, H T Dongola and disembarked in India on the12th October 1910
From the20th to 26th June 1912 he was in hospital in India with Prickly Heat.
Memo dated 6th June 1912. Transferred to army reserve on the expiration of his army service. Brought home prematurely from India under authority of War Office letter No115 A.R./General No/676 (A.G.2.b.) dated 6/6/1912
He was mobilised and posted on the 5th August 1915 and died 28th October 1914, cause of death is unknown (No record was found as to his service with the Grenadier Guards.)

SMITH, George Rowberry S, Corporal 1062, 1/1st Herefordshire Regiment killed in action in Gallipoli on the 15th August 1915 aged 22. Son of Fanny Margaret Cox Nee Smith and Stepson of Thomas Henry Cox. who she married in 1899, of Stoney House, Much Marcle. It appears that he was born out of wedlock Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey

SYMONDS, Harold, Private 355189, 25th (Montgomeryshire and Welsh Horse Yeomanry) Battalion. Royal Welsh Fusiliers, died 28th June 1917. Buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Israel He was the son of Edward and Celia of Harolds Cottage, Much Marcle and brother of Lewis. He enlisted into the army 8th August 1914 aged 19yrs and 11 months, whilst lodging Tynygraig, Builth Wells, where he was working as Groom, Gardener for F A Philips and Son. He was Private 2231, Montgomeryshire Yeomanry then, Private 3555189, 25th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He embarked from Devonport 4th March 1916, disembarked at Alexandria Egypt from 15th March 1916 until his death 28th June 1917. He was killed in action by a shell on the Orange Road, Mansura Ridge, Palestine and was buried in Tel-el-Almar Military Cemetery, Palestine. The chaplin officiating was Robert Jenkyn-Owen C F. who died 6th August 1941 and was residing at The rectory, Swanton, Abbott, Norfolk

SYMONDS, Lewis, Private TR/4/68068, 53rd South Wales Borderers died 13th November 1918. Buried in St Bartholomew Churchyard, Much Marcle His parents Edward and Celia in 1901 named him as Joseph Lewis Symonds. birth name is just Lewis Symonds born 1900, he was the brother of Harold.

TERRY, Charles, Private 70606, 13th Kings Liverpool Regiment, died in the Oswestry Registration District 17th March 1917 aged 36. Son of Henry and Ann of the Yew Tree Public House, Fawley, Herefordshire. Buried in St John the Baptist churchyard, King's Caple, Herefordshire

WALKER, Harry Benjamin, Sergeant 1634, a squadron, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars died 14th October 1915 aged 30. Son of Benjamin and Anna Maria of the Gatchapen, Much Marcle. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey

WEBB, Herbert Thomas, Private 16813, 4th Grenadier Guards died 25th September 1916 aged 22. Native of Bedminster, Bristol, Gloucestershire (Now Somerset) and was the son of Thomas Joseph and Eliza who in 1911 were all residing at 20. Cross Street, Ynysboeth Abercynon, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, South Walesh his occupation was a hewer at a coal mine. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

WHITTAKER, Hubert William, Lance Corporal 235275, 1/1st Herefordshire Regiment, died 26th October 1918 aged 22. Son of William Walter and Mary Ann nee Gregory of Rushall, Much Marcle. Buried at Y Farm Military Cemetery, Bois-Grenier, Nord France

WILMOT, Robert Coningsby, Captain, 10th Sherwood Foresters died 29th October 1917 aged 31 of Perrystone Towers, of Yatton, Herefordshire. Son of Katherine and the late Reverend Francis E Wilmott of Perrystone Towers. Buried in Ruisseau Farm, Cemetery, Belgium

Son of Katherine and the late Reverend Francis E Wilmott of Perrystone Towers. Buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France
