Lance Corporal 18386, Percy MORTER, 9th The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, killed in action at the battle of the Somme, on the 7th July 1916, 25. He was the son of John Robert and Elizabeth Ellen nee Chapman. In 1901 he was living with his father who was now a widower, (his mother died in 1897), at High Street, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. In 1911 he was living with his brother John and his wife, Lottie, at 22 Midlothian Street, Clayton. On the 20th December 1913 he married Miss Katie Hooley at St Cross Church, Clayton. He was aged 22, occupation, labourer, she was aged 19 and daughter of James. They were living together at his brother's home, 22, Midlothian Street, Clayton, both their fathers were deceased at the time of marriage His wife was granted a war gratuity on the 13th September 1919, prior to this award his money went forward to clear and insurance dept. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
