Born 1890

Murdered 14 June 1946 aged 56 in her quarters in the Military Hospital.

She was laid to rest the following day with full military honours in Mogadishu African War Cemetery, Somalia including Somaliland.

Scots Matron Murdered. A Glasgow woman, Mrs. John Curdle, 22 Fortrose Street, Partick, returned home from holiday last night to learn that her sister had been murdered in Somalia (formerly' Italian Somaliland). The dead woman, Miss Mary Ellen Dalton, who was born in Garnethill, was expected home in August after lifelong service as a nurse in two wars. On her last tour of overseas duty after 35 years as a nurse. Miss Dalton was found murdered, in her quarters at the military hospital at Mogadishu, where she was matron. A newspaper report was the family's first intimation of the tragedy.
Miss Dalton served in Mesopotamia in the first world war as a Queen Alexandra nurse. Mrs Curdie told a “Daily Record” reporter last night.
She was due to be demobilised last year after more than three years in the Middle East, but, unable to find a house, she volunteered for another year.
