For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under very . trying circumstances. When his company ' was held up by a machine gun he went forward alone, jumping from shell hole to shell hole until he was within a few feet, when he ran forward, killed the whole gun team and captured the gun single handed.

Maitland, William Barclay, 2nd Lieutenant, formerly Corporal 1926, Gordon Highlanders. Embarked for France 1st May 1915 He was wounded and sent to England on the 6th August 1916. He was discharged fit for war service at the front. On the 31st December 1916 he was sent to England wounded, returning back to his regiment in France on the 12th May 1917. On the 5th August 1917 again to England wounded. Notice in the Buchan Observer 7/8/1917 - "Lt W.B. Maitland, Gordon Highlanders, is reported seriously wounded for the third time. He is the eldest son of Mr William Maitland and Mrs Maitland, 5 Longate, Peterhead." DSO
He was Private/Corporal 1926 William Barclay Maitland of 60 Prince Street, Peterhead. Commissioned 26/9/1917 (GH). Awarded DSO (9/1/1918) Trans. To RFC/RAF Latterly.
