M60A2 rolling down the ramp of a LARC LX 60. (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo(60 ton load cap/100 ton in emergency)).
During the early 1960s there was some debate regarding the future of main tank weaponry, largely focusing on conventional kinetic energy rounds versus missiles. In an effort to utilise both capabilities a new low profile turret was designed equipped with a 152mm Gun/Missile Launch system that could fire conventional HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) rounds, or launch ATGMs (Anti-Tank Guided-Missiles). The M60A2 was intended to serve as the stop-gap solution until the projected replacement by the MBT-70 completed its development.
