Leake War Memorial, Yorkshire
Located at the entrance to the churchyard of
St Mary's Leake.

To the glorious memory of the following men of this parish who
gave their lives for their country in the Great Wars.

BELLWOOD Robert. Private 4058, 4th Yorkshire Hussars killed in action 27th June 1916. Born at Thirsk, enlisted at Northallerton. Son of George Wilson and Jane Ellen of Borrowby Banks, Thirsk, Yorkshire. Husband of Florence Priscilla H nee Price who was granted a war gratuity 6th September 1916, revised 9th October 1919. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire. At rest in Loker Churchyard, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

CALVERT Cyril. Private 2477, 1/6th West Riding Regiment, killed in action 24th November 1915 aged 20. Son of John Shakleton and Mary Elizabeth of 43 Duckett Street, Skipton. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire. At rest in Talana Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up on the 2nd September 1914 and lived with his parents at 24 Russell Street, Skipton. He embarked to France on the 14th April 1915, slightly wounded in the field on the 20th May 1915, returning to duty the same day. Killed in action on the 25th November 1915. His only brother, Gunner 786005 Arthur Calvert, C Battery, 91st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery with the British Expeditionary Force, France. He survived the war.

GAINS Richard Hamilton. Lance Corporal 2497, 1/4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 29th November 1916. Born and lived at Barrowby, Yorkshire. Son of Robert Henry and Ruth of Borrowby, Thirsk, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was a cowman on the farm of Charles Boynton, Balk Wood Farm, Sutton, Thirsk, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, at rest in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

GRAINGER (GRANGER) Edward Private 9638, 17th Coy, Labour Corps, formerly 29751, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds in Dover Military Hospital on the 2nd June 1917 aged 35. Husband of Lily Hooper (formerly Granger), of East Harlsey, Northallerton. Yorkshire. Son of William and Jane of Northallerton. Birth surname is GRAINGER. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire and also at rest in the same churchyard.

GRAINGER Robert Franks. Rifleman C/12573, Kings Royal Rifle Corps died of wounds 9th October 1916. Born at Leake, Yorkshire, son of William and Amelia of Borrowby cum Gueldale, Yorkshire.
Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire and is at rest in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt,-L-Abbe, Somme, France. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, at rest in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

HABLUTZEL George Rudolph. 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Royal Lancaster Regiment died 1st July 1916 aged 39. Son of Henry and Agnes, husband of Lydia Annie Hablutzel (nee Boyes) of Hatfield Road, Northallerton, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was stationed in India aged 33 with the 1st Kings Own Regiment. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He was stationed at Shaft Barracks, Dover and died in France. His effects went to his widow, Lydia Annie. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, also on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

HARLAND James. (Memorial has I) Lance Sergeant 594, 5th Yorkshire Regiment (Yorkshire Hussars) killed in action 1st July 1915. Born at Barrowby, Thirsk, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his wife, Mary and their three children at Sand Hutton, Yorkshire. His wife then moved to 105 Victoria Road, Middlesbrough. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, at rest in R.E. Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

NOBLE Fred. Private 17529, Coldstream Guards, killed in action 31st July 1917 in Belgium. Born at Snailsworth, resided at Thirsk both of Yorkshire. His mother, Harriet, brother James and sister Ada were granted a war gratuity on the 4th February 1918. His other brother, Ivo was granted a war gratuity on the 25th January 1919. He was the son of Robert and Harriet Noble, of Borrowby, Thirsk, Yorks. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, also on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

PEARSON Christopher Miles. Sergeant 153, 36th Australian Infantry died 12th October 1917. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, also on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
Some notes for his army records. He joined up on the 28th January 1916 at Sydney, Australia aged 27 and 4 months. He was posted to 36th Australian Infantry as Private 153. He was born at North Allerton, Yorkshire, occupation, grocers salesman. His next of kin was his sister, Marion Pearson of Coopers Oldfield Cottage, Windermere, Westmorland, Cumbria. On the 13th May 1916 he embarked from Sydney to Devonport, disembarking on the 9th July 1916. He embarked with is unit from Southampton for France on the 22nd November 1916. In France he joined A Company, 26th Australian Infantry, 9th Brigade. 1st March 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal, Corporal on the 31st May 1917, in France. Temporary Sergeant in Belgium on the 16th June 1917, Sergeant in France on the 14th September 1917. Reported missing in action in Belgium on the 12th October 1917, revised the same day to killed in action.

ROWLAND William Henry. Private 60282, 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 20th July 1918. Born at Brompton, lived at Barrowby, Thirsk, both of Yorkshire. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, at rest in Marfaux British Cemetery, Marne, France.

SMITH Thomas. Private 11427, 6th East Lancashire Regiment killed in action 9th August 1915. Born at North Ormesby, lived at Guisborough, enlisted at Middlesbrough, all of Yorkshire. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire also on the Helles Memorial, Turkey, including Gallipoli.

1939-1945
HASTINGS John James. Able Seaman, Merchant Navy, on S.S. Fellside (Newcastle-on-Tyne) died at sea on the 17th July 1940 aged 26. Son of Benjamin George and Elizabeth A. Hastings, of Thirsk, Yorkshire. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He lived at Auckland House, Cophill Borrowby, near Thirsk. His effects went to Benjamin George Hastings, retired police constable. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, also on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

FLETCHER Reginald. Sergeant, Flight Engineers 1088071, 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force (V.R.) died 15th June 1943 aged 20. Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Fletcher, of Borrowby, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's churchyard, Leake, Yorkshire, at rest in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
