Lancelot Norman CROSS, Herbert William SMITH, Arthur DENNETT

CROSS Lancelot Norman. Private, 1759, 21st, Australian Infantry. Died of his wounds, 17th December 1915, aged 25 years. The son of John and Mary Cross, of Natimuk, Victoria, Australia. Inscribed on his memorial. "The land he loved shall wear the fadeless crown her warriors gave"

SMITH Herbert William. Private, 11581, 6th, East Lancashire Regiment, He was taken ill in Gallipoli and died in hospital in Malta on the 18th December 1915, He was born in Oldham, Lancashire and lived in Manchester.

DENNETT Arthur. Private, 13517, 5th, Dorsetshire Regiment, formerly 5741 Dragoons. He was taken ill in Gallipoli and died in Malta on the 19th December 1915. He was the son of Samuel, Publican, and Mary, nee Brown who in 1891 were living at the Bear and Staff Public House, Michelmersh, Hampshire. 1901 his parents were at Brockhampton, South Hampton, Arthur was absent.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted 5th November 1914 aged 35, and worked as a rail guard. He was married to Elizabeth in Durban, South Africa about 1900 and they had four children. Due to bomb damage and fire the names of the children are missing and also details of his wife's maiden name. Three children were born in South Africa and the last one in Scotland. Their ages are shown and I have estimated the year by using the year he enlisted. 12yrs, c 1902, 10yrs, c 1904, 7yrs, c 1907 and the last one 5, c 1909 in Scotland. They were living at ? Huntly, Scotland. On his cover sheet there is part of an address which shows the following. 58, Dub?? Woodo??. He was born at Wimbourne, Dorset. On the 11th November 1914 he was posted Western Cavalry Depot, at Newport, Monmouth, Wales. The 26th February 1915 he was posted to the 4th Reserve Cavalry Regiment affiliated to the 3rd and 6th Dragoon Guards at Tidworth On the 21st May 1915 he was transferred to the 5th Dorsetshire Regiment and he was posted to Gallipoli on the 24th August 1915. He was taken ill and on the 23rd August 1915 he was transferred to St Andrew's Military Hospital, Malta being admitted on the 24th. On the 11th December 1915 he was reported at seriously ill with Bronchitis at St Andrew's, 14th December 1915 he was dangerously ill . At some stage he was transferred to St Patrick's Military Hospital where he died on the 19th December 1915 of Pneumonia.
