He enlisted on the 30 December 1886 as private 1749, Royal Welch Fusiliers aged 20 years and 5 months. occupation was a coal miner. he had previously served with the 3rd North Staffordshire Regiment. His next of kin was his father, Thomas, of 10 Pratt Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme. He served in many locations in India from the 20th September 1889 to 28th December 1894 and then returned to England where he was discharged at Wrexham on the 29th December 1898, his period of engagement had expired. He re-enlisted into Section D, Army Reserve and was discharged on the 30th January 1904 period of engagement had expired. On the 16th October 1914 aged 46 years he re-enlisted as Private 16370, 9th (Service) 3rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers His next of kin was his niece, Mrs Mary Joyce of 40, Fletcher Street, Newcastle. He was posted to Wrexham on the 22nd October 1914. A letter from the War Office dated 2nd April 1914 "Special enlistment as Batman" On the 29th October 1914 he was discharged under Para 392 (XVI) King's Regulation, as being no longer physically fit for war service. On the 5th August 1915he enlisted at Lichfield aged 45 years. into 11th North Staffordshire Regiment as Private 18222. He gave his address as 40, Fletcher Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme. occupation, collier. he had previously servedywo years and six months with the 3rd North Staffordshire Regiment and sixteen years with the the Royal Welch Fusiliers. . On the 1st September 1916 he was posted to the 4th Reserve Battalion, 1st Reserve Brigade North Staffordshire Regiment. His next of kin was his daughter Elizabeth Kelly of Silverdale, Staffordshire. On the 29th October 1917 he was discharged from the army as being no longer physically fit for war service, Para 392 (XVI) King's Regulations.
