MILLWARD Joseph. Private, 20705, 9th Worcestershire Regiment. Died of enteric fever 19th December 1915 in Malta. His widow Esther was granted a war gratuity on the 22nd March 1916, revised on the 12th September 1919 and at that time she was Mrs Esther Moles. Born at Bewdley, Worcestershire.
PONTING Charles Henry. Private, 14321, 9th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Died 17th December 1915 in Military Hospital, Floriana, Malta. Born at Islington London 1891 lived at Walthamstow, son of William and Elizabeth Mary of 24 Fairfield Road, Walthamstow, Essex. In 1911 he was working as shirt and collar cutter aged 20.
SPARKES James. Private, 11365, 7th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, died 17th December 1915. His widow Eliza Ann, Nee Bradbury who he married in at St James, Longton in 1912, was granted a war gratuity on the 24th March 1916, revised on the 1st October 1919. His widow was then Mrs Eliza Ann Tams, wife of James A Tams. Born in 1889 at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire to Thomas and Sarah Ann. In 1891 he was living with parents and siblings at 15 Legg Building, Longton. In 1911 he was living with his brother Elijah and his wife at 8 Arthur Street, Longton, occupation, bricklayer.
His brother Elijah also served his country as Private 4106 North Staffordshire Regiment and survived the war.
N.B. The memorial has the wrong surname, Sparkers, CWGC have been informed.
