HAIGH John William. Private 17208, 6th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, died of wounds 16th December 1915 from injuries received at the Balkans at the Cottonera Military Hospital, Malta. Born and enlisted at Mexborough, Yorkshire. Brother of Mrs Sarah Breeze who was granted a war gratuity on the 3rd May 1916, revised 18th August 1919. In 1911 he was living at 10 Market Street, Mexborough with his wife Eunice Crowther nee Thompson and their two children, Clara aged 3 and Emily aged 4.
Some notes from what remains of his army records
He enlisted at Mexborough and was sent to the Depot at Pontefract on the 16th November 1915 aged 33. He lived at 8 Quarry Street, Mexborough with his wife Eunice Crowther nee Thompson who he married on the 11th May 1905 at Dewsbury, occupation, carter.
His wife had one child prior to their marriage. William Joseph Taylor born 11th October 1904. their children were as recorded in his army records. Clara, born 12th April 1908 and Mary, born 20th May 1911.
His conduct sheet shows that he had a habit of going AWOL (Absent without official leave) 28th February 1915 at Harrogate. Absent from 9-30pm 28th February 1915 till 2nd March 1915. Sentence. One extra guard, six day confined to barracks (6 days CB)
30th May 1915 at Farnley Park Camp near Otley, Yorkshire
Absent from 9-30pm and was arrested by civil police at Mexborough about 8-30pm on the 4th June 1915. Sentence, 6 days C.B. and No.2 Field Punishment. (A prisoner was not liable to be attached to a fixed object so would spend time shackled and either stay in one spot or participate in some form of hard labour for a period of 21 days.)
29th June 1915 at the same camp, absent from 9-30pm and was arrested by the civil police at 6-55am at Mexborough on the 2nd July 1915. Sentenced to 96 hours detention and 10 day C.B.
17th July 1915 same camp. Breaking out of camp about 10 noon and remaining absent to 9-30pm on the 19th July 1915 (Drunk) Sentenced to 168 hours detention and 14 days C.B.

9th October 1915 at Penkridge Bank Camp, Cannock Chase, Staffordshire. Overstaying his pass from 9-30pm til 2am on the 14th October 1915. Sentenced 168 hours detention and 10 day C.B.
On the 25th October 1915 he was posted to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force . He was shot and wounded in the back while at the front and was treated at 26th Casualty Clearing Station, Gallipoli and died of his wounds in Cottenera Military Hospital, Malta and laid to rest either the same day or the following day in Pieta Military Cemetery. CLARK Arthur Henry. Private, 1672, 10th Battalion, London Regiment, died 16th December 1915. Born at Bethnal Green, lived at Waltham Cross and enlisted at Hackney, London. He was the husband of Sarah Jane who was granted a war gratuity on the 23rd June 1916, revised on the 11th August 1919, she was called Mrs Sarah Jane McDonald. 1911 Census he was living at 34 Havelock Road, Tottenham, London with his wife and child, Arthur Cyril aged 7 months., occupation, postman. He was born in 1886 at Enfield Middlesex, son of Thomas Henry and Elizabeth Sarah, nee Corkett.
JAMES Rowland. Private, 12548, 4th South Wales Borderers, died 15th December 1915 in Malta of dysentery. Born in 1875 at Abertillery, lived at Crumlin end enlisted at Newport all county Monmouthshire and the son of Thomas and Naomi.
