Charles SCAIFE and Mary Anne nee Donnelly family.
Charles was Born at Marlebone, London in 1839. Mary was born in 1843 in Ireland.
1866 to 1872 serving with the 61st Regiment (South Gloucestershire Regiment of Foot) who were in Bermuda from 1866 - 1870.
1861 Census. Serving at Private with the 61st of Foot Devonport. He was in a Military Hospital, Devonport aged 22.
1881 Census. Colour Sergeant with the Gloucestershire Regiment stationed at Horfield Barrack, Horfield, near Bristol, Gloucestershire with children, Alfred John, aged 12, born in Bermuda. Eleanor aged 10, born in Bermuda. Louisa aged 8, born in Ireland. John aged 5, born in Ireland. Mary aged 2, born at Horfield, Gloucestershire, William aged 1, born at Horfield, Gloucestershire and Lilian, aged 4 months, born at Horfield, Gloucestershire.
1891 Census. Alma House, Ashley Down Road, Horfield, Gloucestershire. Occupation, clothier porter He was born in London in 1841, Mary born in 1843 at Burr, Ireland. Their children. Eleanor born in 1872 at Bermuda. May Blanche born at Horfield, Bristol, and was baptised on the 11th August 1878 at Horfield. Charles Edwin , born on the 29th March 1882 and christened on the 10th May 1882 at Horfield, (killed in action 8th August 1915). Lilian Margaret, born 23rd December 1880 at Horfield, baptised on the 9th February 1881 at Horfield.
1901 census Now living at 48 Ashley Down Road, occupation, night watchman.

MC, DCM Born on the 19th April 1875 at Newbridge (Curragh Camp) , Kildare, Ireland to Charles and Mary Anne nee Donnelly. Enlisted as band boy in the 2nd Glosters in 1889 aged 15 at Bristol. Horfield Barracks. His father, Charles, was a Colour Sergeant in the same regiment. He received the DCM whilst he was in the Boer War, as Corporal 2622.London Gazette dated 10th September 1901 In 1911 he was stationed in Malta with the 2nd Gloucestershire Regiment. He volunteered for service with the 45th Royal Fusiliers in North Russia, took part in the action on the River Dvina where he was awarded the military cross He died suddenly in May 1929 at the Territorial Army (T.A).Camp, Clevedon, Somerset. His brothers also joined the Glosters. Charles was killed with the 7th Glosters,at Gallipoli, Alfred retired as Warrant Officer 2 in 1936. (In fact he died in 1922) His two sons also joined the Glosters. (Ronald Horace John and Jack). (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) John Scaife lived at 28 Muller Road, Horfield Bristol. ( UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960, Ancestry) On the 18th November 1913 he returned from Malta on ship, Palawan with his wife, and children, Eileen Mary, aged 13, Ronald Horace John aged 8, Jack, aged 7 and Barbara Francis, aged 3 and docked at London. He died 20th May 1929 (aged 54) at T.A.Camp, Kenn near Clevedon, Somerset. His effects went to army pensioner, William Wood.

Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined the 1st Gloucestershire Regiment, aged 15 and 1 month as Boy at Horfield Barracks, (28th Gloucestershire Regiment) Bristol, on the 2nd May 1889, occupation, tailor. He was then posted to the 6th Battalion on the 6th December 1889. He attained the age of 18 in 1892 and was appointed the rank of bandsman on the 21st October 1892, then lance corporal on the 26th March 1897. He re-engaged for the Gloucestershire Regiment at Jersey on the 17th October 1898 for such tem to complete 21 years service. On the 6th February 1899 was promoted to corporal, then sergeant on the 23rd August 1902. He was permitted to continue in the army beyond 21 years service as Sergeant Bandsman on the 21st November 1909. . His postings overseas were. India 6th December 1889 to 28th November 1894, South Africa, 2nd January 1900 to 7th June 1904, Malta, 4th November 1910 to 18th November 1913. He was then attached to the 1st Gloucestershire Regiment in England on the 19th November 1913. He was mentioned in Earl Roberts' despatch of 29th November 1900 for special and meritorious service in the field and distinguished conduct. His next of kin was his wife Mary Ellen and also his father, Charles of Horfield Barracks, Bristol. He was married to Mary Ellen Younger, spinster on the 19th December 1898 at Saint Mary and Saint Boniface, Plymouth, Devon by Rev, Daniel Kennedy, R C Priest.
The following children were recorded. Eileen Mary, born on the 5th February 1900 at 62 East Street, Plymouth, baptised on the 25th November 1900 at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Plymouth by Reverend McNamara, Priest. Ronald Horace John, born on the 15th May 1905 at Warley, baptised on the 4th June 1905 at Warley by Rev J.H.Burnett, R.C.Priest. Jack, born on the 22nd September 1906 at Devonport, baptised at Warley on the 4th October 1906 by Rev J.H.Burnett, R.C.Priest and Barbara Francis born on the 10th April 1910 at Portsmouth, baptised at St John the Evangelist, Portsmouth on the 8th May 1910 by Patrick O'Leary, Catholic Priest. He was discharged as sergeant, having claimed discharged after three months notice on the 17th January 1914.

London Gazette dated 20th January 1916. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Company Sergeant Major John Scaife, from The Gloucestershire Regiment, to be Quartermaster, with the honorary rank of
Lieutenant. Dated 21st January, 1916.

Operations in Archangel, 'North. Russia. Dated 11th 'November 1919 unless otherwise stated. Awarded the MILITARY CROSS.

His brother, Company Sergeant Major 4376, Charles Edwin SCAIFE 7th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 8th August 1915. Born on the 29th May 1882 at Horfield, Bristol to Charles and Mary Ann nee Donnelly, baptised at Horfield on the 10th May 1882. He was living with his parents and siblings at (1891) In 1911 he was serving with the 1st Gloucestershire Regiment at Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth. His widow Florence Maud nee Witty was granted a war gratuity on the 18th April 1918, revised on the 30th September 1919. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli)

His other brother, Alfred SCAIFE. Born in 1868 at Bermuda,( name recorded on the 1881 census as Alfred John), Prospect Garrison in 1868, son of Charles and Mary Anne nee Donnelly. His father was serving with the 61st Regiment (South Gloucestershire Regiment of Foot) who were in Bermuda from 1866 - 1870. In 1911, he was living alone at 62 Church Road, Horfield, Bristol, occupation given as army pensioner. (Wills and Admin, Ancestry) He died on the 8th December 1922. aged 54, army pensioner. His home address was given as 34 Downend Road, Horfield, Bristol and his effects went to John Scaife, M.C., D.C.M., Captain, Gloucestershire Regiment. His death was recorded as Alfred C G Scaife.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He enlisted (embodied service) into the Gloucestershire Regiment as
Private 13919 age 46 and 7 day on the 26th September 1914. He had previously served with the 2nd Gloucestershire Regiment as Sergeant 122 and served in South Africa. He was discharged to army pension, occupation, bank messenger His next of kin was his brothers John Scaife, Sergeant, and Charles Edwin, Colour Sergeant. He was then promoted to Sergeant on the 27th September 1914, then acting Company Sergeant Major on the 8th December 1914. He was posted to the 12th Battalion, then to the 15th Battalion on the 10th August 1915. He was transferred to 93rd Training Reserve 1st September 1916 and appointed as Acting Regimental Sergeant Major (WO1). On the 4th August 1917 he was now with the 92nd Training Reserve as Acting Company Sergeant Major (WO2) He was transferred to the Devonshire Regiment with new army number 31175 still with the same rank A/CSM and posted to the 2/7th Cycle Battalion Territorial Force. He was transferred to Class Z as WO2 at Canterbury on the 12th February 1919 to his home at 23 Church Road, Horfield, Bristol.

Regimental Sergeant-Major 5174921 Jack SCAIFE 1st Gloucestershire Regiment served in WW2 Born on the 22nd September 1906, died on the 24th March 1985 aged 78 at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. He lived at 4 Edward Byrd (bird) House, Gainsborough Road, Lockleaze, Bristol.

Ronald Horace James SCAIFE. Born 15th May 1905, died January 1995 at Bath, Somerset, aged 89. Husband of Freda nee Kirkman who he married in 1944 at Derby. She was born 26th May 1909 and died December 1982 aged 73 at Cleveland, Somerset. No record, yet, have been found to connect him with the Gloucestershire Regiment, or any other H.M.Forces
