Extended Description
Major 4773 John Moore Officer, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Born 31 May 1907 to John Liddel and Adriana Officer, of 29 India Street, Edinburgh.
Posted to Hong Kong and was captured 23 December 1941 by the Japanese army and was interred in Officers P.o.W. Camp, Argyle Street, Hong Kong.
Not sure when he was transferred to Hell Ship, S.S. Lisbon Maru, (cargo ship) where, along with others were crammed into the ships holds.
On 1 October 1942, the ship was torpedoed by the submarine USS Grouper while travelling through the South China Sea, with loss of life. All except for a few Japanese soldiers, the others were evacuated, the prisoner were still in the holds. He managed to get out and made it to a small island where he was captured Japanese Marines. Gunner J.P. Maher who was also on the ship witnessed the Jap Marines killed him by smashing his head on rocks on the 1st October 1942.
He is commemorated on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong.
