In loving memory of Jack (John Lighterwood) Gordon Paterson, midshipman of H.M.S. Bacchante who died of Tyhoid Fever (Enteric) at Malta, January 20th 1905 aged 18 years and 6 months in Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi, Valetta. Deeply mourned by his sorrowing parents, sister, and all who knew him. God rest his tender brave young spirit.
His birth name, John Lighterwood Gordon Paterson.
He is at rest in Ta Braxia Cemetery, Malta.

Born 19 July 1886 to A.G. Paterson, M.D. of South Lodge, Ascot.
Commissioned 15 March 1903, Midshipman. Gained 2 months on passing out of Britannia.
15 September 1901 at HMS Britannia Training Ship.
15 January 1903 served on HMS Bucchante.
12 January 1905. His father in Malta
Died at Malta 20 January 05 (Enteric)

The following account of the death and funeral of Dr and Mrs. Gordon-Paterson's only son appeared in the Malta daily newspaper
It is with deepest regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. John C. Gordon-Paterson, midshipman, H.M.S. Bacchante, who died on Friday afternoon at the Royal Naval Hospital, Malta. The deceased young officer was general favourite not only on board ship, but with all those with whom he came in contact.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Ta’Braxia Cemetery with full naval honour. The service was most impressively conducted by the Rev. G. M. Tichborne, B.A., chaplain of the ship, and amongst those present were Lieutenant Watts-Russell, A.D.C. (representing His Excellency the Governor), Flag-Lieutenant B. Walker (representing the Admiral Commander- In-Chief), the Admiral Commander-in-Chief with Lady Domville and family were also present privately, Dr. and Mrs. Gordon-Paterson, Rear- Admiral Hon. H. Lambton, Captain Cradock, R.N. (Deputy Inspector General), Dr. Bentham, and many other officers of the Fleet.
Beautiful floral wreaths were sent by hie Excellency the Governor and Lady Mansfield Clarke, Admiral Sir Compton and Lady Domvile, Rear-Admiral Hon. H. Lambton, Captain Christopher Cradock, the ward room officers of H.M.S. Bacchante, Fleet Paymaster and Mrs. Green, Captain and Mrs. Beatty, Staff-Burgeon and Mrs. Burnieton, the warrant officers, the chief petty officers, the first class petty ' officers, the foretopmen and the jolly boat's' crew of H.M.S. Bacchante (his crew), forecastle men and signalmen of the same vessel.
