John Henry PAYNE. Stoker K3774, Royal Navy on HMS Albatross. (Born 15th September 1890 as stated on his Naval Record), Born 1891 at Wandsworth, London, he may have been the son of William Henry and Emily nee Jackson who in 1901 were living at 65 North Street, Wandsworth. Enlisted 28th July 1909, occupation prior to enlistment, general labourer. Died in a hospital in Malta 21st May 1910 aged 19 from a rupture to his intestine from an explosion in a private house. "The explosion was caused by a gas explosion in a hairdressers shop in Valetta. Deceased appears to have been in extinguishing a fire in the premises. Great gallantry was exhibited by a seaman of the Malta Royal Naval Reserve *Guiseppe Buhagiar who rescued him at great risk. The Commander in Chief of Mediterranea Forces is strongly of the opinion that Buhagiar is deserving of recognition." His father was informed of his death 21st May 1910.

N.B. His Naval Record shown the name of John Henry PAYNE which is correct, memorial shows John Kenny Payne.
