JOHN HENRY STEPHENS. PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS 136704 ROYAL NAVY ON HMS LEANDER BORN JAN 1865 AT POLPERRO, CORNWALL. ENLISTED ON THE 31 MAR 1886 OCCUPATION PRIOR TO ENLISTMENT, SEAMAN. DIED 23 APR 1904 AGED 39 HE WAS ON H M TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER, CRANE. HE WAS MISSING OVERBOARD AT LAZARETTO GREEK, MALTA HARBOUR. VERDICT - ACCIDENTAL DEATH DUE TO DROWNING. THE FINDING OF THE COURT OF ENQUIRY - ACCIDENTALLY FELL OVERBOARD OR MORE PROBABLY WALKED OVERBOARD IN HIS SLEEP AND WAS DROWNED.
J.H. STEPHENS, Petty Officer, HMS Crane, drowned in Lazaretto Creek on Saturday 23rd April 1904. The sentry saw him on deck, then heard a splash. He alerted the officers and crew. His body was recovered. He was due to leave the Navy after a long and honourable service
