Sergeant 18997 John DOWLE. DCM and M.M. Died in Bristol 14th June 1979 aged 83
Awarded two medals for gallantry while fighting on the Somme. His Distinguished Conduct Medal London Gazette 1st January 1917. Citation reads. For conspicuous gallantry in action. He organised a party and greatly assisted in repelling an enemy raid. Later he rescued a wounded man under fire. He has previously done fine work. A third award, a bar to his military medal was gazetted 23rd February 1918. 10th Gloucesters were disbanded that month and John was transferred to the 13th Gloucesters. He was captured at the Battle of Kemmel on the 25th April and thereafter became a prisoner of war. (Medal Card shows) On the 19th June 1915 he was serving in the Balkan's
