Sergeant James MURPHY. Royal Air Force died at sea 20th October 1942 aged 32 as the result of enemy action. He was on board RMS Laconia was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-156 off the coast of West Africa on the 12th September 1942. The CWGC have him as Corporal 549692. He was the son of Hugh and Harriet Emily. His father was a Bugler with the Royal Irish Rifles. He is commemorated on his parents memorial at Dundonald Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and also on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
