HIRONS James Harold (served as James Harold EDWARDS), Private, 34942, 11th Battalion, Welch Regiment, died 18th April 1917, aged 29 years of tubercle of the lung. The son Charles and Mary Ann Hirons, of Duke Street, Withington, Hereford.

CLARK Ernest James. Pioneer, 26403, 17th Field Coy., Royal Engineers, Fell ill in Salonika died in Valletta Hospital, Malta 11th April 1917, aged 21 years. Son of Frederick and Agnes, of 36 Bulverhythe Road, St. Leonards-on-Sea.

HEAD Charles Edward Milton. Private, 493233, Royal Army Medical Corps, died at Imtarfa Hospital, 17th April 1917, aged 20 years. Born in Rawalpindi, India to Frank and Ellen Head, St. Michael’s, Tenterden. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother at 3 Forest Cottages, Golden Square, Tenterden, he was aged 14 and was an errand boy.
Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up at Maidstone on the 10th August 1914 aged 17 years and 10 months. After he had completed his training he embarked from Southampton on S.S. Kingstonian, disembarking the next morning at Harve, France. From there he was sent to the 31st Field Ambulance. While in France he was admitted to hospital at Boulogne with influenza on the 21st February 1915. He was discharged from hospital fit for duty on the 8th March 1915. He was posted to joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 25th November 1915, disembarking some time later at Salonika. He fell ill and was admitted to 81st Field Ambulance suffering from right inguinal hernia, he was later the same day transferred to 27th Casualty Clearing Station. On the 26th, transferred to 25th Casualty Clearing Station. Salonika. On the 27th January 1917 he was again transferred from No 25 C C S, to 4th Canadian General Hospital, West Mudros, for radual cure of right Inguinal Herina. While he was in hospital he had a persistent cough, his sputum was tested for T.B. but proved negative. On the 22nd March 1917, pyrexia was stated to be maintained since operation and sputum frequently blood stained. He was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship Valdivia on the 29th March 1917 and was admitted to Military Hospital Imtarfa the same day. On arrival he was examined and it was found that he had the condition Pyopneumothorax. Later he developed diarrhoea and he was in a critical condition. In April his condition got better, diarrhoea had gone, but later his diarrhoea had returned. Heart failure gradually occurred and he died on the 17th April 1917. His next of kin was Mrs Phoeby Milton, of The Bakery, St Michaels, Tenterden.
