Died at Barrakka Lift, Valletta 23rd August 1943 aged 33 years from injuries received as the result of an accidental explosion ashore at Barrakka Lift, Valletta, Malta. Wills and Admin, Ancestry - His residence in England was 6 Field Street, Flowery Field, Hyde, Cheshire. Died on date stated and his effects went to Edith Barber, spinster.


Eric William BURFIELD. Stoker 1st Class, C/KX 127854 Royal Navy on HMS Angelo, shore base, Malta. Born 1 January 1914 at Stratford, London to George William and Nellie Gillian Burfield. Husband of Grace Mary Burfield, nee Banyard of Barkingside, Essex. 1939 he was residing at 2 Seventh Avenue, East Ham, Essex, occupation furniture salesman. Died 23rd August 1943 aged 29 years from injuries received as the result of an accidental explosion ashore at Barrakka Lift, Valletta, Malta. His wife passed away 29 March 2015 at Hainault, Essex.

James Handel PHILLIPS. Able Seaman 164578 Merchant Navy on Motor Vessel Dunedin (London) Star. Born 1911 at Newquay to David and Elizabeth Phillips nee Davies. His last known address was Cross Inn, Llandyssul, Cardiganshire. Died 28th September 1941 aged 30 years at from shock as the result compound fracture of right tibia and fibula caused by enemy action at sea. Wills and Admin, Ancestry - His residence in Wales was Gwynfryn Plwmp Cross Inn Llandyssul, Cardiganshire. Died on date stated and his effects went to his widowed mother

Norman WATTERSON. Marine PLY/107688 7th Royal Marines. Born 17 February 1923 at Derby City, Derbyshire to Sarah Mercy Watterson. Died in 90th General Hospital (Imtarfa Hospital and Barracks) 27th July 1943 aged 20 years of a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula of the left leg due to an accidental gunshot wound.

Thomas WHITTAKER. Able Seaman P/JX253362 Royal Navy on HMS Ulster Queen. Born 15 April 1914 at Blackley, Lancashire to Wilfred and Elizabeth Whittaker, of Manchester. Husband of Ethel Whittaker, nee Mudd of Blackley, Manchester. Died 45 General Hospital, Malta 6 October 1943 aged 29 years of cardiac failure secondary to acute haemolytic anaemia. Wills and Admin, Ancestry - His residence in England was 25 Joule Street, Manchester. Died on date stated and his effects went to his widow.

History of the hospital
No 45 General Hospital arrived in May 1941 it admitted patients from July 1941. No 45 GH opened at Pembroke Garrison Gymnasium while the Sandhurst Barrack Block St Patricks was converted into No 45 GH.
