One of the Marines shown here raising the American was Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian. He was taken from his close-knit unit to travel America promoting war bonds. Made out to be a hero, he despised the job and began drinking heavily. After the war, he was found deceased from alcohol poisoning. Strictly my own opinion, but I've always felt he committed suicide by drinking himself to death.
A very sad end for a Marine who was only doing what he enlisted to do. For some reason, his case has always bothered me.
