Irene Melville DRUMMOND. (Mentioned in Despatches ( Matron midwife) Major SFX10594 Australian Army Nursing Service 13th Australian General Hospital. Born 26 July 1905 at Ashfield, New South Wales resided at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Daughter of Cedric and Catherine Drummond, of Millswood, South Australia. Enlisted 23 July 1940 at Kewick, South Australia aged 35 years, occupation nurse. Next of kin was her father of 36 Malcolm Street, Millswood. Embarked 3 February 1941 for Singapore on H.M.T.Q.X.I. Disembarked Singapore 18 February 1941. Embarked Singapore bound for Australia 12 February 1942 on Vyner Brooke. Murdered by Japanese troops on Radji Beach at Bangka Island 16 February 1942, aged 36 years after surviving the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore
