The Dukes were worthy successors to the Type 21s and Type 22s. As far as the Royal Navys frigate fleet was concerned, they were the shape of things to come. HMS Lancaster (F 229) was the fourth to go into construction in a programme which was to last for well over a decade. Built by Yarrow, she was laid down on 18 December 1987, launched on 24 May 1990 and completed on 9 November 1 991. She would be expected to stay in service until 2020 or later, with a majr modernisation in around 2005.
