Son of Herbert William and Elsie Smith Smalley nee Kidsley of Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Commemorated on a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire and is buried at Durbach War Cemetery, Bad Tolz, Bayern, Germany
