Private Herbert Charles NICHOLLS No. CH/2169(S) 1st R.M. Bn. RN Div. Royal Marine Light Infantry.
Died 15 October 1918 from a contusion of the spine at Mile End Military Hospital, Bancroft Road, Stephney, London from a gun shot wound received in action 28 September 1918.

Next of kin was his son. Herbert Charles Robert Nicholls of Fern Cottage, Spilmans Road, Rodborough, Stroud Gloucestershire.

Service History.

Enlisted 21/3/17 age 32. Embarked RM Brigade 18/5/17. Draft for BEF 28/6/17, joined 1st RM Bn. 1/8/17-21/10/17 to 149th (RN) Field Ambulance, rejoined 1st RM Bn. 14/11/17-17/1/18 Trench Feet, rejoined 1st RM Bn. 28/2/18-10/3/18 to UK Leave, rejoined 1st RM Bn. BEF 31/3/18-4/7/18 to hospital, rejoined 1st RM Bn. 8/9/18-28/9/18 GSW contusion of spine, Invalided to UK 12/10/18.

Born 10 March 1885 at Bournmouth, Hampshire to Charles and Mary Nicholls, nee Rood. 1905 he married Alice Janet Anderson in the registration district of Pontypridd, South Wales. In 1911 residing with his wife Alice and children at 1 Mialls Court, Queen Street, Portsea, Hampshire, occupation, dock labourer.

At rest at Rodborough St Mary Magdalene Churchyard, Gloucestershire.
