Henry BETTELLEY

BETTELLEY Henry. Private 73066, 1st Sherwood Foresters, formerly 17358 South Staffordshire Regiment. He gave his life for his country on the 20th November 1917 aged 34, he died of wounds. He was the son of Charles and Bridget and he was the husband of Sarah Ellen of 4, Knowles Road, Portobello, Willenhall, Staffordshire.. He is commemorated on a family grave in Bentley Cemetery, Willenahll, Staffordshire and is at rest in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He enlisted at the age of 32 years and 267 days. and was posted as private 17358 to the depot of the South Staffordshire Regiment, 3rd battalion on the 9th February 1915 he was by occupation a coal miner. He was married to Sarah Ellen Pugh on the 25th February 1911 at Whatlington Registry Office, East Sussex. During his basic training he was at Plymouth on the 9th February 1915 to the 15th May 1915, then Sunderland on the 16th May 1915 to the 27th August 1916. He embarked for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 28th August 1915 where he joined the 7th battalion. On the 16th November 1915 he admitted to hospital in the Dardanelles (his ailment not recorded) what ever it was it was not serious because on the 25th November 1915 he returned to his unit fit for service. However on the 17th December 1915 he was sent to St Andrews Hospital, Malta, again his ailment not recorded. On the 31st January 1916 he was transferred to Base Depot, Mustapha, Alexandria where he rejoined his battalion at Ballah on the 15th March 1916. On the 20th June 1916 he was posted to Sidi Bishr, Egypt from Infantry Base Depot. On the 5th July 1916 he embarked Alexandria and he disembarked at Marseilles on the 10th July. He was transferred to 11th Sherwood Foresters from 91st Brigade Depot. He was wounded in action in the field on the 1st October 1916 and was treated at 27th Field Ambulance. He sustained a shrapnel wound to he left arm and shoulder. The same day he transferred to 6th General Hospital Rouen On the 9th October 1916 he was transferred on Hospital Ship, St George from Rouen to England, location not recorded. On the 12th June 1917 he was posted back to France and on the 20th November 1917 he died of his wounds in 99th Field Ambulance, France of a gun shot wound to his left thigh.
