Harry VERNON

VERNON Harry. Corporal 24421, C Battery, 62nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, killed in action in France 3rd June 1917 aged 25. He was the son of John and Mary of 116 Kings Street, Knutsford and brother of Percy who also fell in the Great War. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire and is at rest in Bunyans Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 3rd September 1914 at Liverpool and he was posted to the Royal Field Artillery. He was aged 23 and 30 days, lived at New Brighton, Cheshire and was by occupation a van man. He was promoted to Acting Bombardier with the 64th Brigade on the 2nd December 1914. On the 22nd March 1915 he was promoted to corporal. He embarked Southampton on the 1st June 1915 and disembarked at Le Harve the next day. He was admitted to 26th Field Ambulance suffering from scabies on the 13th May 1916 and was discharged back to his unit on the 18th May. On the 25th May 1916 he became C.65 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery on re-organisation in the field. (This unit was formed as part of the raising of the First New Army, K1.It is also sometimes shown as 63 Brigade RFA). On the 3rd June 1917 he was killed in action.
