Harry Ernest Such. Sergeant 1609 Royal Gloucestershire Hussars died in England on the 20th (CWGC have 26th) April 1918 aged 41 and laid to rest on the 27th April 1918. He left a widow and two children. Ivy Olive born 15th February 1910 and Cyril James born 6th November 1914

He enlisted on the 21st December 1908 and was discharged due to sickness under Par 392 (XVI) King's Regulation. Silver War Badge issued to him, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Son of Samuel John and Hannah Olive Such, husband of Louie Such, of Belle Ewart, New Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Served in the South African Campaign with the Royal Engineers.
In 1881 he was living with his parents John and Hannah Olive Such, nee Mansfield at 1 Alfred Cottages, St James Square, Cheltenham.
1891 living with his parents and siblings at Caledonian House, Cheltenham. On the 19th December 1908 aged 32 of Caledonian House, Swindon Road Cheltenham he married Louie James aged 24 of 5 Little Bayshill Terrace, Cheltenham at St Pauls Church, Cheltenham.
In 1911 he was living with his wife and daughter, Ivy, at Belle Ewart New Street, Cheltenham.

Some notes from what remains of his army records as seen on Ancestry.
He first joined the Royal Engineers on the 27th February 1900 at Cheltenham aged 28 years and 6 months, occupation, fitter. His army number 6259. At the time of his enlistment he was serving with the Glosters Royal Engineers Volunteers. On the 10th March 1900 he embarked to South Africa and returned on the 24th May 1901. He was discharged on the 29th May 1901 at his own request returning from South Africa, his services not being further required.
On the 21st February 1908 (embodied service) he re-enlisted into the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars and posted to the army reserved to await his mobilisation. He was called to colours on the 5th August 1914 as private 1609, promoted to Corporal, Acting Lance Sergeant 1609. He re-engaged for a further period of four years on the 6th September 1915. Due to an illness he was on an illness he was on a medical board on the 1st December 1915 where he was deemed unfit for further service due to tuberculosis of the lungs which originated in July 1911 when he had an attack of haemorrhage brought on by playing the cornet. He was medically discharged to pension on the 31st December 1915. He did not see service overseas. During his time in the army reserve was training on Salisbury Plain 19th May 1909. Babington Park, 16th May 1911, twice. Bulford Camp Sailsbury Plain, 10th May 1913 and Fatcham ?? 9th May 1914.
