Lt S S Mair was the first RAMC officer to be killed in Malta since the beginning of the war.

Although another medical officer, Surg Capt A E P Cheesman was killed together with his wife when their house was bombed, he was a naval medical officer. He lies buried in the same grave as his wife at the Capuccin Naval Cemetery Kalkara. Another army doctor Major Armstrong Jones Stirling commanding No 57 Field Hygiene Section died of pneumonia. I think only these three military doctors lost their lives in Malta during the last war.

Heavy air raids resumed over Malta on 18 April after a lull in bombings between the 15th and 17th April due to poor visibility. Four large scale raids occurred on 18 April with 30 bombers in each raid. Lieutenant Mair's vehicle received a direct hit at around eleven in the morning while he was on his way to attend casualties at Benghajsa HAA position. He, and his driver No 6562 Carmelo Cutajar Malta Auxiliary Corps, were killed instantly.
On 20 April Lieutenant S S Mair was buried at Pieta Military Cemetery. DDMS, officers from 39 GH and 161st Fld Amb, and Medical Directorate attended the funeral. Carmelo Cutajar aged 30 yrs 11 mth, married with three children, was buried in Zurrieq Parish Church.

Although Lt S S Mair was posted to No 39 General Hospital he was actually doing duty with No 161 (East Anglian) Field Ambulance when he died.
