Gyles Anthony Owen ANDREWS, Lt Commander (E) Royal Navy
13 February 1909, son of Octavius William and FlorenceAugusta Andrews nee Ferrar of St Briavels. 1911 with his married mother and sister at St Briavels House, St Briavels.
At 16.29 hours on 25 Nov 1941, HMS Barham was hit on the port side by three torpedoes from U-331 north of Sidi Barrani. As the ship rolled over to port, her after magazines exploded and she quickly sank. The battleship was sailing with the Mediterranean Fleet from Alexandria to cover sorties by Malta and Alexandria-based cruiser forces against Italian convoys heading for Libya. He lost his life together with the Captain, 55 Officers and 812 . He was aged 32 years.
Commemorated on his parents memorial in St Marys the Virgin Churchyard St Briavels, Gloucestershire, also of the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire
