THE ROYAL NAVY


HUNT, John William, Petty Officer, Stoker K21554, Royal Navy, died at sea on the 8th February 1917 on board H.M.S. Ghurka, destroyer, mined and sunk in English Channel. He was born at Guisborough on the 11th January 1887. He was the son of Thomas and Charlotte Ann, nee Milburn of Guisborough and husband of Daisey, (nee Hogg of Guisborough) of 64, West Street, Portsmouth. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire


DEVON, James, Able Seaman, (Kitchener) KX/346, Hood Battalion, Royal Navy, (Higher Grade, Acting Leading Seaman, 5334 Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He enlisted as 5334, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers on the 2nd September 1914 and transferred to the Royal Navy (VR) 9th September 1914 then to the Hood Battalion same day. He was granted leave from the 1st March 1915 to 24th February 1915, rejoined the Hood Battalion from the 6th June 1915 Prior to enlistment he was a ironstone miner, He left a widow, Francis Annie, known as Florence of 15, Providence Street, Guisborough. He was killed in action on the battlefield in France 20th April 1917. He was born on the 10th June 1888. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


KEIGHTLEY, Norman, Ordinary Seaman (Memorial has Able Seaman) SS/4965, of H.M.S. Bulwark. Killed by an internal explosion of vessel of Sheerness on the 26th November 1914 aged 18. He was born on the 8th April 1896 at Middlesborough, Yorkshire and was the son of David and Sophia, Lenton, formerly nee Marsh of Marsk, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire


MILES, Benjamin Hargrove, Able Seaman,(Kitchener) KX/156, Howe Battalion, Royal Navy Division. Killed on the battlefield on the 5th June 1915. He was born 18th June 1896 at Guisborough and was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth of 2, Allison Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was an errand boy.

He is buried at Skew Bridge Cemetery, Cape Helles, Gallipoli.


SADLER, Fred, Able Seaman. Kitchener P/874, Anson Battalion, Royal Navy. He died 15th November 1918 aged 25 whilst demobilised to civil employment.

He enlisted at Private, Durham Light Infantry 31st October 1914 and transferred to the Royal Navy at Crystal Palace on the 10th September 1914 and joined the Anson Battalion on the 22nd October 1914 He received a Gunshot wound to a finger on his left hand on the 7th May 1915 and rejoined the Anson Battalion on the 28th July 1915. 1st December 1915 he had dysentry and was invalided to England on the 2nd April 1916. He was demobilised on the 21st August 1916 to Messrs, B Samuelson and Co Ltd, Sapwood Miles, Guisborough. Prior to enlistment he was an ironstone miner and formerly served four months as Ordinary Seaman in the Mercantile Marine. His death is not considered attributable to War Service. His wife, Eliza Jane lived at 52, Allison Street, Guisborough and late at 48 Belmangate, Guisborough. He was born 9th November 1893. It is possible that he is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery,


THE MERCANTILE MARINE

FORD, David Duns, Chief Engineer, Mercantile Marine of S.S. Clyde Brae (Glasgow) Killed , as the result of an attack by an enemy submarine on the 3rd October 1917 aged 58. He was the husband of Elizabeth, nee Robinson of Reid Terrace, Guisborough. He was born at Harrington, Kent. and was the son of Benjamin and Alison Clair. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

THOMPSON, George W, 2nd Lieutenant. He may have been the following. George Wilson THOMPSON Born in 1895 at Guisborough to Wilson and Catherine Thompson, nee Duckmanton of 33 Westgate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. Died aged 24 at Guisborough in 1919


WILLIAMSON, Francis, Sergeant 16745, 48th Battery, Royal Field Artillery died 19th September 1916. At rest in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France.


HUTCHINSON, William, Corporal 337926, 326 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 11th October 1917 aged 29, Son of Christopher Robert and Mary Ann Hutchinson, of Guisborough, Yorkshire. At rest in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium


ABRAHAM, Ernest William, (Military Medal) Bombardier L/27673 Royal Field Artillery. Son of Joseph William and Mary Charlotte, nee Copping of (1911) 16 Chaloner Pit Cottages, Guisborough. Occupation aged 17, siding minder at an Ironstone Mine. He died March 1923 aged 29 at his home. He was married to Agnes Mary nee Bowes who he married at Guisborough 1920.


APPLETON, Sidney, Driver 21609, D Battery, 92nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 29th September 1917. Son of Robert and Hannah Appleton, of Newby, Nunthorpe, Yorkshire. At rest in Caesar's Nose, Welsh Cemetery, Belgium.


EASTON, Herbert Henry, Gunner 67419, 112th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 22nd July 1917 aged 21. Son of George and Alice Easton, of South Lodge, Guisborough, Yorkshire. At rest in Couin British Cemetery, France.


JOBLING, Fred William, (Military Medal) Gunner L/27674, A Battery, 161st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 8th July 1917 aged 23 Son of the William and Margaret Jobling, of Guisborough, Yorkshire. At rest in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.


MITCHELL, William, Driver 751023, Reinforcement Camp, Royal Field Artillery died 17th September 1918 aged 22. Son of Robert and the late Jane Mitchell, of Guisborough, Yorkshire. At rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.


NORMINTON, Wilfrid, Gunner 107930, 178 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 16th September 1918 aged 29. Son of Isaac and Mary Norminton; husband of Annie Norminton, of Chapel St., Thirsk. Born at Guisborough. At rest in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


SANDERSON, Harry, Gunner The only Harry, with a rank near to gunner who served in the artillery and is listed with the CWGC is the following. Acting Bombardier 51086, 13th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 3rd August 1917 aged 22. Son of Fred and Mary Alice Sanderson, of 12, Wales Bank, Waterfoot, Manchester. At rest in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Extension, Belgium.


BENNETT, Albert, Gunner. He may the following person. Gunner 45058, A Battery, 109th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 14th September 1916 aged 28. Son of Richard Bennett, of 38, Long Row, Port Mulgrave, Hinderwell, Yorkshire. At rest in Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
