DAYNES, James, Private 8654, 8th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 18th October 1917. He was born and lived in Guisborough and was the son of William and Robenia of terrace Belman, Gate, Guisborough and worked as an Ironstone miner . He is at rest in Hooge Crater Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium


DUNN, Harold Peacock, Private 11487, B Coy, 8th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 10th July 1916 aged 34. he was the son of Elizabeth Dunn, of "Harflour View", Cowbar, Staithes, Yorks, and the late Robert Dunn and husband of Mary Jane Dunn, of 35, Station St., Middlesbrough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France


EASTON, James Grievson, Private 201864, 5th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action. 28th October 1917 aged 35. He was the son of George and Mary Jane of Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium

He was born and lived in Guisborough. he may have been the son of Robert and Elizabeth EDON (1911 census) of 56, Lord Street, Middlesborough, Yorkshire He is at rest in Railway Dugout Burial Ground, West Vlaanderen, Belgium


ENGLAND, Sidney, Private 10395, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 20th November 1915 aged 21. He was the son of son of Mrs. E. A. Burron (formerly England), of 33, Calthorpe Street., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, and the late Mr England. In 1911, He was living at his grandparents (James and Maria) of 19, Hewitts Building, Guisborough Native of Guisborough, Yorks. He is at rest in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, Pas de Calais, France


EMMERSON, William, Private 204066, 1/5th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 27th May 1918 aged 20. He was born at Barnby Moor, and enlisted at Guisborough both in Yorkshire. He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth of 2, Upsall Pit Cottages, Barnaby Moor, Guisborough. He is at rest in Vendresse British Cemetery, Aisne, France


FLANARY, Harry, Private 200236, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd April 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Henry and Dorothy Jane of 161, Westgate Guisborough and brother of George who also fell. He is at rest in Wancourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


FLANARY, George, Private 200382, 3/4th Yorkshire Regiment died in England on the 19th February 1918 He was the son of Henry and Dorothy Jane of 161, Westgate Guisborough and brother of Harry who also fell. He is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery, Yorkshire (The CWGC have Flannary G)


FOSTER, C, Private (No C Foster or variants listed with the CWGC and other records) There may have been a mistake, I believe it should have been 'G'. There is this soldier. Private 22591, George Foster 12th Yorkshire Regiment died in England 2nd March 1917 aged 43. He was the son of John and Ann Foster, of Old Hall, Normanby and husband of Elizabeth Ann Young (formerly Foster), of 20, Haddon Street, Middlesbrough. He is at rest in Eston Cemetery near Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Some notes from what remains of his Army Record. He joined up on the 25th May 1915 at Grange Road, Middlesborough aged 39 years and 183 days. His occupation was an Ironstone miner , He was posted to 12th Yorkshire Regiment, Penkridge Bank Camp, Rugeley, Staffordshire. His next of kin was he wife, Elizabeth Ann nee Foster whom he married at Middlesborough Registery Office on the 17th January 1899 and they lived at 51, William Street, Eston, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. On the 9th August 1915 he was admitted to 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle on Tyne where he was diagnosed has having and the cause of his discharge from the army on the 29th October 1915. He was suffering from Mitral Stenosis with affection of Aortic Valve. The disability is of long standing and probably due to previous rheumatism. His wife was awarded a widows pension by the army for herself and three children which took effect from the 3rd March 1917.


FRITH, Isaac, Private 8165, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment, died of wounds 8th July 1916. He was born and lived at Southbank, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. In 1901He lived parents Henry and Jane Ann and siblings at 21 Hewitts Building, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. One of his brother's, David, born 30th November 1894 at Guisborough joined the Navy as Boy J10123 and in 1911 was at His Majesty's Royal Naval Training Establishment, Shotley, near Ipswich, he was aged 16.


GILLARD, Charles, Private 11782, 7th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 12th July 1916 aged 31. He was the brother of James of Old Bank Head, Eston, Yorkshire and son of James and Mary nee Hoyle of Guisborough . He was born at Barnaby Moor, Eston, Yorkshire and enlisted at Middlesborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


GOSLING, Charles, Private 10439, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 21st November 1914. He was the son of John Boyer and Rebecca of 16, Walton Terrace, Guisborough. His occupation in 1911 was a driver. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium


GRANT, Ramsey McKay, Private 17073, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 15th June 1915 aged 21. He was born at Guisborough and lived and enlisted at Middlesborough, Yorkshire . He was the son of James McKay Grant and Fanny Grant of 53, new Road, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


HAIGH, George, Private 26573, 7th Yorkshire regiment died of wounds 9th February 1917 aged 26. He was the husband of Daisy, nee, Lee of 93, Margrove Parl, Boosbeck, Yorkshire He was born and enlisted in Guisborough and was the son of Louisa nee Winter. In 1901 he was living with his mother, siblings at his grandfather (Thomas) home at 6, Moors Yard, Guisborough and in 1911 with his mother and siblings at 4, Cleveland Place Guisborough. His father was called Alfred. He is at rest in Grove Town, Cemetery, Meaulte, Somme, France


HARPLEY, William, Private 1680, 4th Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 17th September 1916 aged 23. He was the son of William and Annie of 121 Westgate, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France


HEBRON, Wilson, Private 18077, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 5th November 1915 aged 22. He was the son of Wilson and Hannah Mary of 15, Bennison Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, Pas de Calais, France


HURN, George William, Private 200040, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died 14th October 1919 aged 40. He was the husband of L A Hurn of 4, Bulmer's Buildings, Guisborough, Yorkshire, He is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery, Yorkshire. Some noted from what remains of his Army Record. He joined up at Guisborough 14th April 1898 and served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion Yorkshire Regiment . He was aged 30 years, and miner, employed by Cochran and Co, 24, Auckland Street, Guisborough. He lived with his wife, Lucy at 26, Auckland Street. From the 3rd July 1909 to 4th August 1914 he did his annual training, No overseas postings. Embodied from the 5th August until recalled to the colours on the 15th April 1915. and posted on the 16th. He served in France from the 17th April 1915 to the 14th May 1915. He received a gunshot wound to his head and chest in France on the 1st May 1915. (No record has survived as to movement whilst injured. He was in England from the 15th May 1915 to his discharge from the army as being no longer physically fit for war service on the 13th April 1917 to his home in Guisborough. He was seen by a Lt Colonel, RAMC on the 19th March 1917 at a medical board. which said he had a depressed fracture of the skull, and loss of memory.


LORAINE, William Rippon, Private 3439, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 15th September 1916 aged 36. He enlisted at Guisborough. he was the son of Chapman and Mary Ellen Lorains, of 8, St. Hildas Cottages, Church St., Whitby and husband of Alice Ann Haxby (formerly Loraine), of 38, Rutland Street, Middlesbrough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France (The CWGC have LORAINS)


MEE, Albert, Private 201820, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died 16th September 1916 aged 28. He was the son of Mrs Sarah Mee of 25, Redcar Road, Dunsdale, Guisborough, Yorkshire, his father was called John. In 1911 he was living with his mother and siblings at 11, New Road, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France . A brother, Herbert also served with colours .

He was Private 23269, Yorkshire Regiment. aged 19, and gave his home as 229, Westgate, Guisborough and his mother Sarah of the same address was his next of kin. occupation farm labourer. He enlisted on the 12th August 1915 and posted to the Yorkshire Regiment Depot. He served in the Mediterranean from the 27th October 1915 to 1st July 1916. France 2nd July 1916 to 28th May 1917. He was wounded several times in France. On the 21st May 1917 in the field he received gunshot wound to his right hand. No record was found as to what treatment he had in the field except on the 28th May 1917 he was sent to England from Wimereux on Hospital Ship, St Andrew and he was admitted on the 29th at the War Hospital, Bradford. He regiment was given as D Coy, 8th Yorkshire Regiment, attached to 69th Machine Gun Corps. The 9th November 1917 he had gunshot wound to his left knee and was treated in 22nd General Hospital, Camiers. He was discharged from hospital fit for war service to the Field Depot at Etaples on the 31sy December 1917 and posted to the 2nd battalion on the 16th May 1918. Luck was still with him because on the 3rd August 1918 at 22nd Causalty Clearing Station he had burns to hand and face. No record at to what treatment he was given. He was demobilized to Class Z on the 13th March 1919 to his home at Guisborough


MOORE, Joseph Sidney, Private 45778, 6th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 10th October 1917 aged 23. He was born in Loftus , lived at Hilton and enlisted at Stokesley all in Yorkshire. He was the son of John Bainbridge and Ann of 50, Allison Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire, formerly of Stone Bridge Farm, Guisborough He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium


MUIR, John William, Private 37880, 3rd Yorkshire Regiment died 6th December 1918 aged 19. The following is extracted from Wills and Admistration on Ancestry.co.uk "Muir, John William of 33 Allison Street, Guisborough Yorkshire and private in the Yorkshire Regiment died 6th December 1918 at Hornsea Military Hospital Yorkshire. Adminstration York, 18 March to Charles Muir farm bailiff Effects £116" He was the son Charles and Jane E of 15, Thomson Street Guisborough, he was employed at a Ironstone miner. His birth place was Stillington Durham. He is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery.


NIXON, John George, Private 8583, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 12th March 1915 aged 46. He was the son of William and Elizabeth. He served 8 years in India, (1895 Chitral) (1897-8 Tirah). He was born in Guisborough, lived in Normandy, Yorkshire ane enlisted at Stockton on Tees. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


RICHARDSON, James, Private 10835, 6th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action at Gallipoli 22nd August 1915. Native of Middlesborough. He may have been the son of James and Mary Ann of 8 Linthorpe Mews, Middlesborough He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


ROBINSON, Frederick William, Private 28155, 9th Yorkshire Regiment died 20th May 1917 aged 35. He was born at Skelton in Cleveland, lived at Hylton, Yarmouth and enlisted at Stokesley. He was the son of Charles and Ellen who in 1911 were living at 1, Prospect Place, Skelton in Cleveland near Guisborough. He is at rest in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, West Vlaanderen, Belgium

He was the son of William and Beatrice Mary of 54, Belmangate, Guisborough, Yorkshire, his occupation was an Ironstone miner. He is at rest in Bancourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


ROYLE, James Henry, Private 1664, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 2nd May 1915 aged 20. He was the son of James and Lydia Elizabeth of Rosedale Abbey, Pickering Yorkshire, formerly of 45a Mill Street, Guisborough. Employed at the Ironstone mine. He was born at Henbury, Cheshire and enlisted at Guisborough. (The SDGW have Henry James) He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial Gate, Ypres, Belgium


SHORTEN, Robert Sydney, Private 23246, 13th Yorkshire Regiment died 5th august 1916 aged 18. He was the son James and Susan,( now Mrs Metcalfe of Park View Terrace, Guisborough, Yorkshire) In 1911 he was living with his parents and siblings at 12, Bulmer Buildings, Guisborough, he was working as a Grocers clerk. He is at rest in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, Pas de Calais, France. His brother George Frederick of 12, Bulmers's Buildings, Guisborough joined up 4th August 1915 aged 19yrs 4 days, occupation farm labourer and his next of kin his mother Mrs Susan Metcalfe. He was Private 22714, 12th Service Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. On the 8th August 1915 posted to the Dept at Teeside. He was discharged from the army on the 27th June 1916. Not likely to become an efficient soldier. King's Regulations Para 392 III (CC)


SIMPSON, John It may be this soldier. Private 37099 John Thomas, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 26th March 1918 aged 19. He was the son of William Thomas and Eliza Hannah of 11, Belmont Terrace, Guisborough. He was born and enlisted at Middlesborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.


SMITH, Felix, Private 34674, 10th King's own Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 4779, Yorkshire Regiment died 25th September 1916 aged 17. He enlisted at Guisborough and was the son of Richard a and Hannah Mary of 16 Charlton Terrace, Stanghow near Gusiborough, Yorkshire and brother of George Raymond who also fell. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France

He was the son of Richard A and Hannah Mary of 16, Charlton Terrace, Stanghow, near Guisborough and brother of Felix who also fell. He was employed as a day man underground at a mine

He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. (The CWGC and SDGW have Raymond George. His medal card shows George R.)
