THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENT

CHARLTON, Bernard Hedley (Military Cross) Lieutenant Colonel, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 22nd March 1918 aged 32. He was the son of William and Frances Elizabeth Charlton, J.P., of The West Garth, Guisborough, Yorkshire and husband of Mrs. D. F. Money (formerly Charlton), of 79, Wodeland Avenue, Guildford. he is at rest in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France


CARLTON-STIFF, Charles Nevill, Captain 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 22nd March 1918 aged 36. he was the son of John Thomas Carleton Stiff and Maria Eliza, his wife, of "Alfoxden", Chestnut Avenue, Torquay. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France


RICHARDSON, Arthur John Buchannan, 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died 4th January 1915 aged 19. He was the son of Col. William Richardson, V.D., and Averil Mary, nee Buchannan of Daneholm, Sandsend, Whitby. Born at Guisborough. He is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery, Yorkshire


SCORER, Nicholas, 2nd Lieutenant 4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds, 29th March 1918 aged 20. He was the son of William and Margaret H. Scorer, of 22, Balmoral Gardens, Monkseaton, Northumberland, late of Newcastle-on-Tyne. he joined 1st Life Guards on his 18th birthday, afterwards transferred to the Household Battalion. He is at rest in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


CANNON, Stephen, Sergeant 3/8998, 8th Yorkshire Regiment died 11th May 1918 aged 54. Native of Wakefield and lived at Belmongate both in Yorkshire. He was the son of Thomas and Susan and the husband of Mary. He was living with his wife and children in 1911 at 18, Bank Street, Guisborough. He is at rest in Dueville Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy. One of his sons was also serving with the colours. He was Private 680, Arthur Brian, 2nd heavy Section, Royal Army Service Corps. He joined up at Bradford on the 3rd September 1914 aged 19 years Served in Rouen and Marseilles, France for the periods 8th October 1914 - 16th August 1918, England, then France 1st September 1918 to the 22nd March 1919 and demobilized on the 24th March 1919


JONES, Jesse, Sergeant 484, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 3rd May 1915 aged 47. He was the husband of Catherine of 9, Hewitt's Buildings, Guisborough Yorkshire. He was a native of Mitcham Surrey and enlisted at Guisborough. He is at rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France


LIMMER, John Thomas, Lance Sergeant, 11491, 8th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 10th July 1916 age 33. Born at Normanby, Easton, enlisted at Middlesborough both in Yorkshire. He was the son of Robert and Mary Limmer, of Grassington, Skipton, Yorks and husband of Rose Webster (formerly Limmer), of 24, Pearson Street, Newport, Middlesbrough, Yorks.


ROYLE, William, D,C,M,. Sergeant 200604, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 12th April 1918 aged 26. He was the son of James and Lydia Royle, of Rosedale Abbey, Pickering, Yorkshire and husband of Margaret Royle, of 10, Park Street, Middlesbrough.


ALLEN, Richard Henry, Corporal 917, 4th Yorkshire regiment died of wounds 22nd July 1915. Enlisted at Guisborough. He was the son of John and Sarah (1911 census) of 3,George Street, Guisborough, working as an Ironstone miner. He is at rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


GRINNELL, Frederick William, Lance Corporal 11588, 7th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 1st July 1916. Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire and lived in Guisborough. He was the son of William Henry and Katherine of 10, Ashleigh Manor Road, Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, occupation a Tram conductor. He is at rest in Fricourt British Cemetery, Somme, France


JARDINE, Thomas Andrew (Tom), Corporal 200558, 1/4th Yorkshire Regiment died December 1923 and he may be at rest in Guisborough Cemetery as a civilian, because the stop off date for inclusion in the data of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is 31st August 1921.

Some notes of what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 14th September 1914 at Guisborough and posted to the 4th Reserve Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. 29th April 1915 he was transferred to the 3/4th Yorkshire Regiment. 2nd May 1915 with the 3/4th appointed Lance Corporal, and on the 9th February 1916 was deprived of his stripe and reverted to Private and posted to the 1/4th Yorkshire Regiment. 24th October 1916 still with the same battalion appointed paid Lance Corporal, and then Corporal on the 28th December 1916. He was transferred to the 86th Territorial Force Depot as Corporal on the 14th May 1917. He served in France from the 10th February 1916 to 13th May 1917. He was discharged on the 5th September 1918 at York as being no longer physically fit for war service, Para 392 XVI, King's Regulations. His next of kin was his mother Barbara of 8, Northgate Guisborough, formerly 29th Child Street, Guisborough


PAYLOR, Arthur, Corporal 11825, 8th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 10th July 1916. Born in Whitby and lived at Guisborough, both in Yorkshire. He was the son of Jonathan George Hill and Mary Ann. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


RIX, Arthur, Corporal (CWGC have Private 235904, 2/4th Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 2130 Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 29th September 1918. He was the son of Mrs E A Rix of 58, Westgate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. he is at rest in Lowrie Cemetery, Havrincourt, Pas de Calais, France)


STANGER, Charles, Corporal, 1392, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 4th August 1915. Born at Kings Lynn, Norfolk and enlisted at Guisborough. He was the son of Sarah Ann nee Sculpher and Joseph William Stanger. His father died , mother remarried and now is stepson to John Milverton of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He is at rest in Strand Military Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium.


COCKERILL, Henry, Lance Corporal (No record listed with the CWGC nor SDGW). 1901 Census shows Henry Cockerill living with widowed mother Mary Jane at 4, Chaloner Terrace, Guisborough, his late father was called Henry. His occupation was given as a horse driver at an Ironstone Quarry (Carter) 1911 with his wife Mary Jane at 1 Redcar Road, Dunsdale, Yorkshire, still working at the mine as a labourer. There is a medal card from Lance Corporal Henry Cockerill 2796, Yorkshire Regiment and Lance Corporal 27831, Royal defence Corps. Served in France and may have enlisted on the 10th October 1915, this date is on the card. He was born in 1884 in the registration district if Guisborough


AGAR, William Amos, Private 3010, 5th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 16th September 1916. He enlisted at Guisborough and was the son of George and Louisa who were all living in 1911 at 2, Scaifes Yard, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France


ALLEN, Fred, Private 200235, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 15th January 1917. He was born and enlisted in Guisborough and was the son of John and Sarah of 3, George Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France


APPLEGARTH, John George, Private 3173, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 19th September 1916. He was the son of Thomas Frank and Harriet of 32 Northgate, Guisborough. He is at rest in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery, Extension, Somme, France


BALLS, Ernest, Private 11489, 10th Yorkshire Regiment died 9th July 1915. Born, and is at rest in Guisborough Cemetery, Yorkshire He was the son of John and Mary Ann nee Plowman and in 1911 was living with his wife Annie Eliza at 86, Bellmangate, Guisborough. He was working as an Ironstone miner


BENNETT, Robert Henry, Private 201007, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd April 1917 aged 18. In 1911 he was living at 1, Chaloner Terrace, Guisborough with Walter and Elizabeth Baxter, he was recorded as son,. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


BLAKEY, William, Private 16570, 2nd Yorkshire Regimen killed in action 8th July 1916 aged 28. He was the son of William Thomas and Eliza of 36, Albion Street, Murton Colliery, formerly in 1911 at 33, Alfred Street, Murton both County Durham. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France


BOTTOMLEY, George Armstrong, Private 235125, 4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd April 1917. Born 20th September 1896, christened 9th October 1896 at Guisborough and enlisted at Guisborough and was the son of George Armstrong and Emily Jane of (1911) 60 Church Street, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


BOYES, George, Private 13276, Yorkshire Regiment. Some notes of what remains of his Army record. he enlisted on the 3rd September 1915 and was posted to the depot at Richmond the next day. He was aged 33yrs and 3 months. He was married to Mary nee Mitchell on the 12th February 1901 at Guisborough, he had issue 7 children. He was residing with his family in 1911 at 18 Cleveland Street, Guisborough and later at 10, Albion Place, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Prior to enlistment he was working as an Ironstone miner. He was discharged from the army on the 11th January 1915 with defective eye sight.


BRENTON, Sidney Russell, Private 20488, 9th Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 7th October 1916. Born at Boosbeck , lived at Guisborough and enlisted at Middlesborough all of Yorkshire. He was living with his widowed Mary Jane Phillips, (1911 census) at 21 Cleveland Street, Guisborough, and working as an Ironstone miner. His late father was called Thomas. he is at rest in Adanac Military cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France


BRETT, George, Private 26733, 9th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 7th June 1917 aged 22. He was the son of George and Emma of 76, Church Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.


BROWN, George, Private 30510, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died 23rd April 1917. Born at Roundhay, and enlisted at Guisborough, both of Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


CAMPION, John William, Private 10818, 6th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action at Gallipoli, 22nd August 1915 aged 30. He was born at Guisborough and was the nephew of Margaret Campion of 45, Westgate, Guisborough and was the son of William and Martha. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


CAREY, Roy, Private 7513, 4th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 25th October 1916. Born in Guisborough and enlisted at Middlesborough both in Yorkshire and was the son of William Roy and Margaret who in 1911 were living at 44, Bolckow Street, Guisborogh. He was working as a Bank boy in a mine aged 16. He is at rest in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France


CARNELL, Frank, Private 3/8618, 2nd Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd December 1914 aged 31. He was the son of john and Harriet of Guisborough and husband of Lily of 56, Church Street, Guisborough. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium


CLEAVER, Charles, Private 3748, 1/4th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 15th September 1916 aged 28. He was the brother Mr Herbert Cleaver of 6, Manton Burn Road, Grove Hill Middlesborough. and the son of Francis William and Sarah of 39, Mill Street, Guisborough. He was born at Giusborough. He is at rest in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France


COLLINS, Fred, Private 26465, 7th Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 19th July 1916 aged 27. He was the son of Isaac and Jane Ann Collins, now Jackson, of 5, Hutton's Yard, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in St.Sever Cemetery, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France


COOK, Thomas, Private 12889, 167th Coy, Machine Gun Corps, formerly 24171, Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 25th October 1916 He was born at Middlesborough and enlisted at Gainsborough both in Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


COOPER, A. It may be this soldier, Arthur, Private 201615, Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd April 1917. He was born at Walton Essex and lived at Horden, County Durham. (No connection with Guisborough has been found) He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


COTTLE, George, Private 201660, 5th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 19th July 1917 aged 26. He enlisted at Guisborough. He was born at Stangow, Yorkshire and in 1911 he was living with his parents, George and Mary Ann at 16, Allison Street, Guisborough. He was working as an Ironstone miner. He is at rest in Heninel Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France


DAVIES, Joseph, Private 13208, 9th Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 23rd December 1915 aged 38. He was born at Ironhouses Guisborough, lived at Upsall, Guisborough and enlisted at Middlesborough all in Yorkshire. He was the son of Joseph and Hannah of 86, Charltons ?, Stanghow and was the brother of Samuel who also fell. He is at rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France
