GUISBOROUGH WAR MEMORIAL
PANEL 1

NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS


JACKSON, Thomas Henry, Sergeant 6092, 11th Northumberland Fusiliers killed in action 7th July 1916 aged 21. He was the son of Henry of 42, Fountain Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.


SEATON, John Thomas, Lance Corporal (CWGC have Corporal) 17/945, 17th Northumberland Fusiliers, N.E.R.(North Eastern Railway) Pioneers) killed in action 12th November 1917 aged 29, He was the son of William Henry and Annie of Tocketts Mill, Guisborough, Yorkshire. Native of Marske, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Guisborough Cemetery, Yorkshire and he is at rest in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium. Two of his brothers also joined up and survived the war. Arthur William enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps as Private 1847 and was demobilized on the 1st March 1919. Robert joined the 2/0th Scottish Rifles and was later promoted to Lance Corporal 235389, In 1917 he was transferred to the 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was demobilized 12th February 1919


APPLEGARTH, John George, Private 9015, 12th Northumberland Fusiliers, who was killed in action 26th June 1916 aged 33. He was the husband of Alice of 130, Westgate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France (Memorial has John)


BELL, Edward, Private (It may be this soldier). Private 6784, 16th Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds 14th February 1917. He was born at Beeston Yorkshire and enlisted at Middlesborough. She is at rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France


COLLINS, William, Private 5356, 12th Northumberland Fusiliers, Killed in action 27th September 1915 aged 36. Native of Guisborough He was the son of Thomas and Ann Collins, of 15, Lackenby, Redcar and husband of Clara Jane Collins, of 5, Bottomley's Row, Eston, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


DAVISON, John George, Private 6778, 11th Northumberland Fusiliers, died 7th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France


JACKSON, Matthew, Private 16504, 8th Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action 14th August 1915 aged 30. He was the son of Leonard Jackson, of 92, Bolcow Row, Guisborough, Yorkshire and husband of Emma Walker (formerly Jackson), of 1, Stable Cottage, New Marske, Yorkshire He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


KERR, William, Private 16742, 8th Northumberland Fusiliers, died 18th July 1916 aged 36. He was the husband of Mary Jane of 1, Hutton Village, Hutton Gate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He was native of Kirk Santon, Yorkshire and is at rest in Barly French Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France


MAGUIRE, Robert, Private 16717, 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, died 26th May 1915. He was native of New Marske and enlisted at Guisborough, both in Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium


MILBURN, Ernest, Private 22/1234, 22nd Northumberland Fusiliers,(Tyneside Scottish) killed in action 1st July 1916. He was native of Guisborough and enlisted at Sunderland, Durham and the husband of Minnie of 2, Derwent Street, Hutton, Yorkshire, occupation a coal miner. He is at rest in Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme, France


NELLIST, Isaac, Private 16438, 8th Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action 10th August 1915 aged 37. He was the son of Henry and Margaret of Guisborough and husband of Hannah of 23, Child Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He was native of Guisborough and enlisted at Middlesborough and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


PEARY, Arthur, Private 16444, 8th Northumberland Fusiliers, died 19th August 1915, aged 35. He was native of Pinchinthorpe and enlisted at Guisborough, both in Yorkshire. His parents were David and Emma He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey


PRIESTMAN, John William, Private 7516, 14th Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds 8th March 1916. He was the son of Henry and Ann and the husband of Maria nee Galivan of 17, Thomas Street, Guisborough, occupation, Ironstone miner. He is at rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France


WILSON, Arthur, Private 6781, 11th Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action 14th January 1916. Native of Middlesborough, enlisted at Eston, both in Yorkshire and is the husband of Margaret of 109, Westgate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is at rest in Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois-Grenier, Nord France


ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGIMENT

METCALFE, Edward, Private 11973, 9th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, killed in action at Mesopotamia on the 29th November 1915. He was native of Dunsdale, enlisted at Guisborough both in Yorkshire and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq


WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT

AINSLEY, Ernest, Private 268298, 2/5th West Yorkshire Regiment, died of wounds 2nd September 1918 aged 19. He was the son of Joseph and Mary of 26, Stainton Street, North Ormesby and he is at rest in North Ormesby Cemetery, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his brother John William and his wife at 1, Mill Street, Guisborough.


MANN, Amon, Private 15904, 11th West Yorkshire Regiment . He died in 1918 out of service and is not included in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of those who fell or died. Some notes of remains of his Army record. He joined up at Middlesbrough 9th November 1914 and posted to the Army Reserve. He was aged 21 years and was a miner. He was called to the colours and after training was sent to France from the 26th August 1915 to the 14th July 1916. He died not return to active service. He received a gunshot wound to his right foot, near the ankle region. in 1916 possible on the Somme. He was medically discharged to pension and no longer physically fit for war service. He was transferred as Private to Class 10 Army Reserve for employment as a miner to work at Shawood Mines, Guisborough on the 28th March 1917. He received a pension which took effect from the 21st March 1917. He served 2 years and 132 days with the colours, he passed away in 1918


MUDD, Fred, Private 3485, 1/8th West Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 16th July 1915. he was native of Kildale and lived in Guisborough, both in Yorkshire and was the son of James and Harriet He is at rest at New Irish Farm Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium


EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT

BRAMLEY, William, Private 51207, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 29540, East Riding Yeomanry, killed in action 7th September 1918 aged 20. he was the son of John Ridsdale and Phoebe Ann of 13, Gill Street, formerly 75 Church Street both in Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Haniaut, Belgium


BUXTON, Kenneth, Private 220448, 1st East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 3459, Yorkshire Regiment , killed in action 25th April 1918 aged 20. he was the son of James and Margaret Elizabeth of 21, Northgate, Guisborough, Yorkshire. he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.


SIMPSON, John Thomas, Private 37099, 10th East Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 26th March 1918 aged 19. He was the son of William Thomas and Eliza Hannah Simpson, of 11, Belmont Terrace, Guisborough, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France


TOOLEY, Charles, Private 220191, 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 204108, Yorkshire regiment, killed in action 27th May 1918 aged 25. He was the son of John and Mary Ann of 17, Bellmangate, Guisborough and the husband of Clara Ann of 12, Allison Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire. he is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.


WALLACE, John, Private ( There is only one "J" Wallace serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment and that is Lance Sgt James Watson Wallace from Hull who died in 1917). There is a John R Wallace born 1871 and died 1918 at Guisborough
