Gertrude BYTHEWAY. Nurse VAD. Born 1881 to George and Lottie Bytheway, of Walsall, Staffs. 1891 residing with her parents and siblings at 31 Lysways Street, Walsall. 1901 with her parents and siblings at 158 Wednesbury Road, Walsall. 1911 residing at 22 Foden Road, Walsall, occupation Elementary Teacher, employed by the Walsall Borough Council. She embarked along with other nurses and troops bound for Egypt on Transport Ship, HMS Osmanieh which struck a mine in Alexandria harbour. She was drowned 31 December 1917 aged 37, her body was recovered the same day. Her sister Effie Bytheway way was granted a gratuity 3 July 1918 revised 20 November 1919.
