German survivors being rescued. My father, Marine Stanley Stephenson assisted the surgeon whilst operating on a German survivor. He helped by administering the ether drip during the operation.

One of the reasons why these pictures are so rare is that the German High Command issued instructions to the U-Boat packs to attack even Allied ships that were stopped to aid German survivors.
What they didn't realise was that the Allies had captured an Enigma machine, and could decode messages to their U-boat fleet.
Subsequent orders to the Allied ships forbade any Allied vessel from stopping to pick up enemy survivors, although some brave Skippers took the order literally and slowed down with landing nets slung over the side to at least give survivors a chance of rescue.
N.B. Did anyone notice what appears to be a lady at the extreme right of the picture towards the stern of the boat?
