ALWAY George William. Private 1116, Private, 23rd, Australian Infantry. Died of sickness at 8.30 a.m. the14th November 1915, aged 41 year at Floriana Hospital, Malta.
He was the son of William and Matilda of Dyrham, Gloucestershire.
Some notes from his army record. He joined up in Australia on the 1st October 1914 as Private 1116, 2nd Army Veterinary Section and discharged himself from this section on the 1st December 1914. He rejoined on the 5th January 1915 as Private 1116 and was posted into D Company, 23rd Battalion. He had previously served for 7 years in the Imperial Yeomanry. He gave two next of kin, both sisters. Mrs Mary Ellen Hayward of 15, Brookleage Buildings, Larkhill, Bath, formerly of 5, Eldon Place, Larkhill, Bath and the other Miss Bessie Alway of 67 Queen Street, South Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. While in Gallipoli he went sick , his complaint was not recorded but on the 12th November 1915 he was transferred to Malta on Hospital Ship Devemha, suffering from pneumonia. He was admitted into Floriana Military Hospital, Valletta, Malta where he died on the 14th November 1915. He was laid to rest the same day in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
BUCKNELL Harry. Corporal, 1483, 2nd County of London Yeomanry (Westminster Dragoons). Died of his wounds received at Gallipoli, 14th November 1915, aged 27 years at 12 pm in Tigne Hospital, Malta. Son of George and Martha Bucknell, of Sidmouth, Devon. The husband of Grace Edith Bucknell, of Orchard Leigh Villa, Chesham, Buckinghamshire.
CLEWER George. Private 100801, 33rd Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Died at 11.45 a.m. at St Andrews Hospital, Malta of dysentery, 15th November 1915, aged 20 years.
He was the son of Albert and Amy Sunderland Clewer, of 5 Ellercroft Road, Bradford, Yorkshire.
