George Robert THOMPSON. Lieutenant, Australian Flying Corps died 3rd July 1918 aged 26. Son of Alexander James and Mary Thompson, husband of M. L. Thompson, of 26, Fawkner Street, St. Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria. At rest in Leighterton Church Cemetery, Gloucestershire.
Some notes from his army records.
He joined up on the 1st May 1917 into 9th Reinforcements, A.F.C., aged 25 and 9 months. He was a Officer in the Permanent Forces . He was appointed Flying Officer Pilot on the 16th October 1917. On the 3rd July 1918 He was killed whilst flying solo in a R.E. 8 while practicing aerial gunnery . No notes from the Court of Enquiry were in his records. There is reference to the condition of the body and plane. His injuries were fractured skull, sever leg and abdominal injuries and extensive burns. Most of the plane was burnt.
