George RILEY

RILEY George. Private 27379, 16th Cheshire Regiment. He died of wounds in Germany on the 25th November 1917 aged 29 which he received in action. He is was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann and he is commemorated on a family memorial in Knutsford Cemetery, Cheshire. He is at rest in Gent City Cemetery, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 17th July 1915 aged 27 and 6 months and was posted to the army reserve. He was by occupation a general labourer and he lived at 25, School Lane, Lostock, Gralam, Cheshire. On the 4th December 1916 at 3rd (Home Service) Garrison Battalion at Cheshire he was awaiting trial by District Court Martial. He was tried and sentenced on the 27th December 1916 to 56 days Field Punishment No 2. He was acting as a sentinel on active service when he left his post before he was regularly relived . The G.O.C. gave him 8 days remission and he was returned to duty on the 12th February 1917. On the 17th July 1917 he embarked for France, and he joined his regiment at Rouen on the 19th. On the 22nd October 1917 he was reported missing in action. The fact was he was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans. He was held and treated at Kriegs Laz Military Hospital, Ghent, Germany where he died of his wounds which were gunshot wound to a thigh and upper arm on the 25th December 1917. He married to Hannah Elizabeth Smith on the 28th November 1908 at Bucklow Registry Office, Cheshire and he lived at 25, School Lane. His wife after his death remarried to Edward Stagg. She was living at 8, Wilton Bank Cottages, Northleach, Cheshire when she received his Memorial Scroll and King\'s message to her late husband. They had issue three children. Frank, born 14th February 1909, George, born 25th January 1911 and Thomas, born 2nd July 1914 all at Lostock Grahlam.
