George JORDAN

JORDAN George. Sapper 98111, 75th Field Company, Royal Engineers, killed in action in France 15th September 1916 aged 36. He was the husband of Mary nee Walton of 26. Church Street, Willenhall, Staffordshire. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bentley Cemetery, Willenhall, Staffordshire and also on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted at the age of 34 years and 310 days on the 11th May 1915 at Darlaston. He lived with his wife and four children at 26 Church Street, and he was Blacksmith, tool maker by trade. He was married on the 16th September 1906 at Wolverhampton Registry Office. Some of his basic training was at Chatham, Kent from the 11th May 1915 to the 20th May 1915, then at Salisbury Garrison from the 20th May 1915 where he was transferred to 84th Field Company . On the 27th September 1915 at Newark, Yorkshire he was in the bad books with the military authorities. He was charged with over staying his pass while on active service. from midnight of the 27th September to 9pm on the 28th of September, absent for 21 hours. His punishment was 2 days confined to camp and he forfeited one days pay by order of Captain E A Cummings. He embarked for France on the 10th October 1915 and was killed in action on the 15th September 1916. He left a widow and four children. George born 17th June 1905, Thomas, born 6th March 1907, Anne, born 9th August 1909 and Mary Jane, born on the 5th August 1911 all in the registration district of Wolverhampton.
